This is a good question and something I am going to have to look into. There are books that I have bought but not read... way too many truth be told

In eleven months, I have yet to buy an eBook.

My eBooks have been either those that came with my jetBook Lite or were downloaded mostly from MR's library.

I had a little pre-agency binge but haven't read them all yet so I am not sure how to count Next year, I anticipate my spending will go way down. My mom has been giving me money to buy ebooks for her and some of them, I will read, plus I have a huge backlog to get through, plus I get review books for my blog, plus I am just very cautious with new authors, plus I am no longer playing the Fictionwise micropay game and buying stuff I might not like etc.

The other thing is, I track by money spent divided by books read, and that includes the cost of devices. So I don't just keep a straight dollars spent accounting, because the stats take into account amortization from free books, library books etc. and only count completed books. Going by that number, I am at about $8 a book, which is satisfactory to me and a much more useful number than simply saying 'I spent x dollars on books this year.' Even so, I am anticipating halving my total next year.

I've had a Kindle 2 since Nov 21 2010 -- call it a year. I've also acquired a Kobo (May 1) and a Kindle 3 (Aug 30), and a couple of accessories (covers for the Kindles).

I've mainly shopped at Kobo, Fictionwise and Amazon, but a few purchases were made elsewhere such as the Sony store. In Canada, the Sony store is pretty lame and, since May, Fictionwise as well -- pretty lame. But it surprises me how few purchases have been at Amazon -- $100 vs. $200+ at both Kobo and Fictionwise. But that is attributed to the ongoing Kobo discounts and the former Fictionwise micropay plan, now expired.

In year one, the hobby has cost:
• $685 on devices + $80 on accessories
$580 on ebooks for 146 titles
• $25 on ebooks for 100 titles of 2 classic mystery writers that probably are subject to copyright

So ... even though some of the ebooks have cost as much as $20 (!), and several have flirted with $10, the freebies (of commercial, not PD, works) and lower cost items bring the average cost down to abt $4 each. And that includes all taxes, etc.

Looked at another way -- I've spent $585 on Kindles and accessories but only $100 on ebooks -- 19 paid and 26 free, but just $170 on the Kobo (I love Canadian taxes ... not) and $235 on ebooks -- 42 paid and 4 free but most of those paid acquired some sort of discount.

I've had my Kindle 3 since early September but have so far read only 6 books on it (I'm on my 7th one now). They were all freebies! So: $0.

I've acquired quite a few ebooks since I got my Kindle, including non-free ones; however, I've still only spent $0.36 because I bought them all using gift cards I earned at various websites. Yay!

I've either read classics from the archive here and at manybooks. Or have re-read some of my old p-books. So I am at $0. I am going to purchase the latest wheel of time book, but as I want to 'refresh' myself with the story before I purchase it, it may be some time (or I'll get it for christmas from the OH).

I don't track, but I'm paying less for e-books than I was for trade paperbacks, which were my print staple. And I like being able to buy on demand. I'm a happy camper.

This year, I got to about AUD $35, before it became too tedious to buy ebooks at a price I think is fair.

Last year, was closer to $150, when I could still get books from waterstones, fictionwise and others. Next year, will be close to $0

Now you made me curious. 15 purchases at BN.com for 81 dollars and change; 33 at Books on Board for 249 + ; 18 at Sony, but I can't get it to show me how much I spent, but I'm figuring it averaged 7.99/book so, another 143.82.

I told Chris and he said, "Meh"... LOL.

That's for purchases though, I haven't read all of them yet.

Read on the Kindle since I acquired it earlier this year:
  • Time-limited freebie promos from the major outlets: 20 full-length books, 6 stories/novellas/shorts, 5 novels unfinished at at least the 40% mark.
  • Public domain freebies: 3 novels.
  • Baen Free Library, Tor.com freebies: 3 previously unread, 11 re-reads from paper versions.
  • Public Library e-book collection: 11 completed books, 2 partially finished.
  • Kobo paid purchases: 3 completed, 2 partial.
  • Fictionwise paid purchases: 10 books, 4 short stories.
  • Amazon paid purchases: 1 partially completed.
This makes for a total of 61 completed full-length books, 8 completed novellas/short stories, and 11 partially-read books which I may or may not continue.

My total cost for the books I actually paid for out of the ones I've read or gotten pretty far into reading is: $51.23, which divided by 66 (counting each partial-complete book as a half with the novellas/shorts tossed in for good measure), nets me an average cost of 78 cents per read.

If we exclude the stuff I've already read in paper copies and re-acquired as e-book versions as well as unfinished/shorts, then the total is 47 at $42.96, thus 91¢ per.

My average read-and-paid-for cost is $2.68. Thank you, Fictionwise and Kobo, for your excellent discount coupons and good MultiFormat genre selections/lack of Agency no-discounting-allowed pricing for Canadians.

I've probably read 20 paid books all from amazon at an average of 9.99 each, some cost more, some less. I also have read a lot of freebie public domain books. I try to mix one of those in every other book. This month it will be The Woman in White, the Mobileread Dec Club book.

One of the good point with the wheel of time is that the books are long

Somewhere around 160-170 euros I would say.

I've read 22 ebooks I've spent money on so far this year, at a total cost of $173.55, or an average of $7.89 a book--mass market paperback prices, more or less, which isn't a bad value for something I'm probably going to read once and never open again. (If you average in the 66 ebooks I read for free, the cost per book drops to $1.97. Now that's a bargain!)

Ebooks that I spent money on this year, whether I've read them or not, come to 46 at a total of $280.29, or an average of $6.09 a book. (Not surprising that the average drops--if I see a book I think I might like at a really good price, even though I don't intend to read it soon I'm likely to pick it up. On the other side of the coin, if there's a book I really want to read, and soon, I'll dish out more. But not more than $9.99. (Clearly I'm one of those people.) But again: I'll read it once and probably never open it again, so it's not worth more than $9.99 to me. It's like going to the movie theater--I see the movie, that's it, I'm done. (And I'm not paying more than $9.99 to see a movie, either--I don't care how much more it costs to make than a book.))

Ugh..you had to make me look.

$340 since August of this year. That's just from NY publishers. All my indies are from SW.

To figure out everything else, I'd have to dig up my iTunes, B/N, and Kindle accounts. And I don't want to do that.

And I'm not going to go all the way back to 2007, that would just make me sad.
