I really liked the Sony A33 but like you had mentioned, not enough current reviews though the London Drugs guy assured me he thought it would be the best for my experience level, needs and so on.

its been a very long time since I've used anything beyond a p&s camera but I for sure don't want something I'll grow out of in 2 years too.

I like the Nikons but they lenses are pricey and does throw me off. The Sony feels better in my hands then the Rebel and though.

I think so far I'm still leaning towards the Sony but I'll take a look at the Pentax K5 but I don't see them at London Drugs so I'll try Henrys this week.

I want to buy one around February so still lots of time for more research
Super!!! keep us up to date on your adventures in DSLR hunting!! I am willing to bet if ya get your hands on the K5 you won't wanna let it go!! The beastie is very seductive. Oh, if they don't have any K-5's in stock the K-7 is the exact same body, well save for a couple buttons I think but it could be they just re-purposed some buttons. I am pooped out and can't remember for sure now but I do know the body itself is the same on both models. it's still weird that the K-5 is the newer body. But the thing takes such great shots, is one of the best DSLR's made for high ISO/low light shooting and has huge dynamic range, over 14EV, it actually competes with full-frame in terms of most parts of image quality. Still it's not FF which will always have certain advantages.

Have fun!!

LOL. That's funny. Canon has some nice software for the PC to let you play around with RAW files.

The hidden truth about DSLR's is that the cost of the body is a fraction of what you can end up spending on good lens. It can get obscene quickly.

You beat me to this comment. Canon's DPP is very good, and Adobe's Photoshop platforms are the "Mac-Daddy" (sorry, couldn't resist!) for photo processing. My Canon T2i plays very well with those.

@terrasky: That was bad info (Rebels geared to Macs), no doggy biscuit for whomever told you that!

And that is the absolute truth. With DSLR, you're locking yourself into a platform, not just a camera. In addition to researching camera bodies, you're probably better served in finding out what lens models/costs are, and if third party solutions (read, cheaper) are available.

Actually, the DSLR is nothing more than the piece of crap you have to put between your lens and your eye.

I'd suggest to give lenses no less than 90% of the budget...

Myself. Photography forums get amazingly tense, personal and nasty. Best not to get drawn in.

Yeah, that's the first time I've EVER heard something like that. I doubt the value of that person as an advisor on photography!

That's because too many people think it's all about the equipment not the Images(which in their eyes exist to solely justify their choice of camera).

I must say though it is gratifying to learn that I'm not the only photographer who can read.

As a Canon fan, I use nothing but a PC and Canon cameras (7D, 20D, 870IS). Any Photoshop program is available on either Mac or PC and the software that comes with Canon runs on either platform so your computer choice is not an issue. Nikon charges extra (!) for their RAW-reader which is a downer.

In the end, it is the photographer, not the equipment, that counts. I have good 11x14 images from 35mm, 8mp and 18mp cameras. If you can't look at a photograph and tell what camera brand took it, what difference does it make?

Regarding the Canon+Mac...he meant for the video formatting... I want user friendly software that even my hubby could use and not something that i'd need another program to convert .avi( I think this Mac's video format) to something else.

If that makes sense. I dont anticipate using the video option on any camera a lot but as we don't have a separate camcorder I will use it enough to warrant making it a fairly important consideration if that makes sense
