elizilla, you clever devil. Thanks for your candor.

TO ALL:
What confuses me is how the official Sony 950 light (in the 950 cover) will distribute light evenly when the reader displays the two page (landscape) mode.

The Sony Website is incorrect. The actual dimensions of the two models are:

PRS-900 = 4.875 x 8.125 x .594 inches @ 12.75 oz.
PRS-950 = 5.125 x 7.875 x .406 inches @ 9.6 oz.

Just got back from Target. They did have the capstone light there for $20. On my way to it though I saw a stand of some other book lights by a company called pathways. In the mix down at the bottom was a $10 e-reader light. I picked it up and brought it with me to compare when I found the capstone one. Upon getting to the e reader section I found the capstone one to look oddly similar. After closer inspection they both were indeed the same light with just a few tiny discrepancies.

Capstone - $20, had metal looking hinges, had a soft carrying case for the light, spelled the low setting "low"

Pathways - $10, had plastic hinges the same color as the unit, had no carrying case, spelled the low setting "lo" and came in black or white

I pulled them both out of the box and inspected them both completely. They are manufactured by the same place most definitely. The boxes even had the same descriptions on them point for point and bullet for bullet.

So anyway, my point is, if anyone wants to get a good e reader light and you don't care about the case, there is one for $10 at Target that should suit your fancy.

Now that I got my light, time to look for a case for the 950.
Anyone know what the necessity for some kind of screen protector is for one of these?? It doesn't seem to scratch easily, but want to make sure.

Abqpete - Thanks for the info, it at least makes me feel a bit better that sony wasn't just blatantly trying to rip people off. That does seem to be their sony style

Thanks for sharing this information, Sonics99. $10 is a better deal than what I paid. I just did a google search, and it appears that Capstone has a product line called Pathway Lights. I didn't see this one at my Target. Mine only had the $20 version and the Belkin Light. From your description it sounds like maybe it was in the regular book section?

I have never used screen protectors for my ereaders, unlike my other electronics. I find the screen to be very durable and haven't had an issue with scratches. I always keep it stored in a cover. I find the band around the edge of the ereader to be more susceptible to scratches when I carry it in my purse (since the edge isn't protected by the cover).

Thanks for the advice.

Yes, the light was off a bit. The kindle, kindle cases, and capstone lights were all in one aisle by the electronics section. Down by where the books were they had an end-cap with a ton of booklights on it all by pathways. At the bottom of this rack they had like 5 of the e-reader ones. The rest were all standard booklights of different types and colors.

Oberon Design covers: (oberon.com) The Kindle 2 Oberon cover which I just obtained, fits the Sony PRS 950 very well and securely. The instructions are to fit the bottom leather straps first, then the left top-which needs a small amount of pressure extending it over the left corner. The right top corner which is last in the process is a bungee which of course works easily. The volume control(bottom right) is the only control on the 950 which is covered to such an extent it can not be easily used without pushing your finger through the strap. The on/off and wifi switches have nubs which are easily accessed and only slightly covered by the leather straps and all the other controls are open and uncovered. These covers are very expensive-$80. They are so beautifully made and crafted they are well worth the expense if you have the extra change around. I would suggest you view the video on the site to observe how well they are made. The designs are beautiful and unique, most probably outlasting the 950 and probably holds it even more securely than the Kindle 2-see the video on the rep holding and shaking the cover inside out with the Kindle 2 inside. The sides are reinforced and the edges are so well formed that if you drop the cover the are undamaged. The covers add some weight to carrying the 950 but it is negligible in my opinion. Bottom line: You won't be able to keep your eyes away from these covers.

Natasha_fawn alerted us that the DecalGirl skins for the PRS-950 are NOW available. They are beautiful and even include a standby photo that is part of the graphic design (although in greyscale).

I got this cover at Besy buy and it is awesome. Fits perfect, love it! Good, quality feel to it, even better than M-Edge.

Looks nice but what's it like to carry around... half a pound of extra weight seems to be a hefty addition to get in a pocket?

My 950 is too big for convient pocketing anyway... not too bad actually. It doesn't feel heavy, more like really sturdy. Here's the measurements:

Product Height 8.7"
Product Width 5.7"
Product Weight 8.8 oz.
Product Depth 0.6"

My reader fits beautifully, and it converts over into a stand too. The inside is nice and cushioned, kinda feels like suede. On the bottom it covers the wireless switch but leaves all the buttons (page turn, home, etc) free; on the top (it has the 2 elastic corner thingies) power switch covered a little, SD card slot a lot but stylus and Pro Duo are fine. It kinda reminds me of the Tuff Luv covers; I wish I could post a pic of it but alas, my fat cat sat on my scanner and knocked it over.

Cross-purposes... I missed that it was for 950... will look further as I'm interested in covers for 600/350/650. I can see that for 950 this one looks good and the weight isn't such a factor...

I can confirm two things.....from my own experience.

The mounting system for the 950 covers is completely different than for the 900....definitely won't work.

The Sony lighted cover for the 950 works beautifully. The light comes on automatically when the light stalk is lifted from the receptacle. And the light covers the entire screen when adjusted correctly...even the 2-page view. The stalk is an old fashioned goose-neck that flexes to just about any position you could possibly want. There is also a "low" and "high" setting.

Hmm thanks for the info makes me lean towards just spending the money and getting the case with the light from Sony. With the $10 light I bought and the $20-$30 for a case I'm close to the same price anyway for something I am forcing to work on the 950.

I too got the Sony case with light despite some bad press it's gotten around here (I'm not sure but I think the $50 price might've had something to do with that).

I was already planning on buying a light anyway, so like you say, once you factor the separate light in, to me it made sense. And I wanted a cover specifically made for the 950, of which there are very few I've found out.

And I'm loving the cover! The light is awesome and the cover has a very sophisticated feel to it.

Also, if you call Sony to order it, you can usually get a discount of at least 10% off if you ask for one, which would save you at least $5 (so I got it for $45).
