The small-stepping on the Kindle sounds nice and it has the advantage of landscape view. For PDF, the Kindle is better than the nook, but neither are particularly good.

Yes, you can, from anywhere in the world. (At least for now, but Amazon hasn't hinted that they will be cutting off that service anytime soon.)

No. You can try Calibre (even without owning a Kindle; it has a built-in viewer), but you will not be completely happy with the results.

Most books have DRM wrapped around them which adds an additional hurdle to conversion. Unless you are at least moderately-skilled with computers, it will be gigantic headache.

The original file? No.

The Kindle had a reasonable advantage until the last software update. You would be hard-pressed to see a difference between the two devices in text quality or page-turn speed.

They are fairly evenly matched, to be honest. The free worldwide 3G web browsing and smaller device size do lend an edge to the Kindle.

The big advantages of the nook are the multiple included fonts (and better support for your own fonts in your own content), the local B&N fostered community, and the replaceable battery.
