Resets may be SOFTWARE related.
I have nearly a full battery charge when the resets occur and I keep my WiFi on all the time.
However, I notice that with firmware 3.0.0 I had several resets each day after I received it in August. I recieved my first replacement Kindle WiFi on Sep 9, 2010, and updated to firmware 3.0.1. I had NO resets from that day until I upgraded the firmware to 3.0.2. After I upgraded to 3.0.2 I had one reset on Nov 3, 2010, and then one more on Nov 14, 2010. I then upgraded to 3.0.3. Then I had a reset on 3.0.3 on Nov 21, 2010, while I was fumbling with keys and hitting the font size button by mistake when aiming for the period button. I did that several times and may have triggered the reset that way. The interesting fact is that I had ZERO resets with firmware 3.0.1. If the hardware was at fault, I would have had several resets from Sep 9, 2010, to when I upgraded to 3.0.2. That was not the case. I now believe rapid keystrokes could trigger the problem since I frequently look for bible verses using Direct Verse Jump and have large indices on the unit for a variety of bible references. I will try and slow down my keystrokes and see what happens. I believe Amazon guaranteed the units against hardware defects for 12 months. If I see the spontaneous resets increasing in frequency, I'll return my unit for an exchange. It is also possible that the next firmware upgrade to 3.0.4 may end this problem entirely. As a side note my poll to test if other Americans had any reset problems indicates 75% have had no problems with resets at all. That makes me think maybe I should return my unit. BTW, how long did you have 3.0.1 before you installed 3.0.2? In my mind the updates were very close together. Maybe you didn't have 3.0.1 long enough to see the spontaneous restarts or maybe it was the best update for you (so far). |

Contacted Amazon CS
I contacted Amazon Customer Service and they were able to access my unit directly from their site.
They are going to analyze my unit to see if a firmware upgade or a hardware replacement is necessary and will call me back in a few days. I had mentioned to them that for 2 months with firmware 3.0.1 I had no spontaneous resets at all. However, I am now using 3.0.3 and cannot downgrade back. I had waited to upgrade to 3.0.2 until it was the final version. I upgraded to 3.0.3 while still a preview version because of the problems with 3.0.2. It is possible they may "push" 3.0.4 to my device hopefully containing the routine from 3.0.1 which prevented all spontaneous resets. It is also possible they may replace my unit again. This is the first time I became aware that the Kindle Development Team can access and run diagnostics directly on our units and replace the firmware if required. Unclear
The technician I spoke to was probably located in India as determined by the sound of his accent. He was not aware of any specific details but was able to access my unit from his location.
I mentioned to him the possibility of downloading 3.0.4 from an internet site but he said it is not yet available in that manner. However, he did say the Kindle Development Team have the resources to replace my firmware. Thus, they could downgrade me back to 3.0.1 or even upgrade me to an alpha 3.0.4. They also have the ability to determine if my hardware needs replacement with a new unit. I'l know the answer in a few days. When my first unit was replaced on Sep 9, 2010, this kind of control was not apparent. At that time CS, whose accent sounded American, just simply replaced my unit without anyone running any diagnostics. See this thread for quite a few other folks with the same problem as me but all different from the folks in this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=105989 Folks there attributed the problem to indexing of large books. My problems started with my purchase of the Unabridged Matthew Henry Commentary whish is TWENTY FIVE TIMES the size of a usual eBook. Maybe that is the problem. In that case there is really no solution and I will just have to tolerate the once per week reset. Last edited by sirmaru; 11-22-2010 at 11:14 AM. |
