Are those clamps smack-dabs? How do you use them to secure the Kindle?
Not that I need to, but I'm curious to my nature.

Here's the Official smak-dab:

I thought I read (but can't find it now) that it was a metal clip covered in plastic. But maybe it is just plastic/nylon.

Here's the official smak-dab:

I thought I had read (but can't find now) that it was a metal clip covered in plastic but it might be all plastic/nylon.

What I did discover with MY version (the office clip) is that it needs to be near the center (spine of the case) or it is hard to grab the light and pull it out.

Amazon sells or so does the manufacturer - shipping is about the same cost as the $3-$4 clip!

So basically it is a gizmo to cover up a choice of weak material in the cover? Would the cover be more crash proof if made of ruggerized rubber?

The inherent design flaw of the cover, if it can be considered a flaw, is that the materials making up the cover are flexible, particularly, since the cover needs to have a SPINE like a book with two flaps coming off of it. The kindle attaches to the rear by a kind of "stand-off" arrangment. The two prongs slip into the left side of the kindle's slots. A totally rigid arrangement might have worked for a non-lighted cover. In order to grasp the LIGHT, you need to get your fingers somewhat between the kindle and the cover.

While I made my own - I just ordered the smak-dab - it probably is better finished that my clippy-thingie.

Cheaper shipping through smak-dab directly - using paypal.

I think if you turn the lighted Kindle case upside down and slide the light out with your thumb, you won't have to work your way between the K3 and the cover... or so I've read. I've obviously had no experience with the cover myself.. but have one coming for my daughter's K3 Christmas present... and before I discovered this issue. So I'm going to get a couple of those smak-dabs to have a spare just in case (no pun intended).

I put my thumb up against the light's back end where there are a small plastic ridge and push upwards and a little towards myself. This dislodges the light from its holding mechanism and then it is easy to pull it out all the way. On the bus I like to turn the front cover all around the back and hold it in place with the attached cord. SO I don't want the light too much out of its socket before the front cover is resting behind the back cover.
