Devil's advocate... Enjoy your iPad right now but DO NOT upgrade to iOS 4.2 quite yet. Why? As you use that iPad you are going to learn a lot about what it does and what it can potentially do. Give yourself some time on some of these forums:

Mobileread iOS Forums - https://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=170

iPad Forums - http://www.ipadforums.net/forumindex.php

Once you see what is available and doable with Jailbreaking and workarounds you'll see that the latest iOS isn't always the best one to have.

Welcome to the awesome world of iPad!

If you have jailbroken your device, you should already know that you need to postpone iOS updates until a jailbreak is available for the latest upgrade.

If you haven't jailbroken your device, then I've not heard anything negative about the update. That said, I will probably wait a day or two to install it. Not because I want to jailbreak, but I like to let other people work the kinks out before I jump in.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice, I'll definitely be hanging on to it given the comments here.

It is supposed to be a Christmas present so it will sadly remain boxed for a little longer but it's giving me plenty of time to read up on jail-breaking and the various apps I might use.

Very tempted by Amplitube and the guitar interface, I currently run my guitar through the laptop to do the same thing but this could be a lot of fun when on the move.

Cheers, I'll be back with questions no doubt.

Ah well, I think I'll keep it. I imagine they'll hold value pretty well so I can always upgrade at a later date if I decide I can't live without it.
you will find, when you start using it, that it is not a "complete luxury purchase". It's so flexible you will find yourself using it for things you never dreamed of. Heck, during the summer I was using mine to find my way around Yellowstone Nat Park, and make campground reservations for the trip there and back while driving down the highway. And then reading some fine fiction whilst sitting around the campfire in the evening.
