I bought a refurb Nook wifi a couple of months ago and love it. I wasn't sure if I would like e-reading at all, to tell you the truth. I've bought other refurbed products and have never had a problem. Plus, the ones they're selling now come with the regular, full-length warranty. The 3G isn't an issue for me.
When the 1.5 update came out, I lost any remaining Kindle envy...I'll take touch screen and swipes over buttons any day. |

Thanks redbird. I read that and wonder... what the heck am I missing? What is it about the Nook that I don't like?
I think it comes down to that touch screen on the bottom and the page buttons on the side. The demo version already had cracks in the plastic on those buttons... which didn't inspire any confidence. And I like buttons I can press over virtual buttons. Maybe I could learn to love it over time. But then I think, what's the point? I'm not into acquiring tastes. Darn. |

speedlever, funny thing is, I didn't plan to buy a nook. In fact, after handling one at the B&N store I decided against it. I was set on a Sony. I finally read enough posts to realize that each device had drawbacks and the choice was very personal. Then I came across the Nook refurbs and decided to buy it, knowing I had 2 weeks to make up my mind. Within a day, I was hooked. (I still prowl around looking at the Sony thread, but this way I get to use a touch screen without getting smears on my pages.)

Got delivery of my $119 Nook3G today. Looks new. See particulars on the reader under my username. I could not believe that they are still selling SN as low as that (should have a socketed microSD card). Well, figured I am now my own warranty center, and popped the torx screws including the one with the white hymen. Sure enough it has the socketed microSD card, but oddly has a 1.4.3 FW.
3G was only $20 more on the refurb. Can't go wrong there. I got this thing to read more, so I figure why spend less to make the goal more difficult? I'm busy trying to figure out if I can softroot from 1.4.3 or if I am going to have to configure my DNS, so the wifi is off and the sim card is sitting in the carton. I'd say go with the 3G refurb as you are saving more by spending more! Doesn't that always seem to be the case? |
