The device is a small portable computer. Yes, the same can be said about a GPS, but there is more of an expectation, because of the above-mentioned Development Kit, that the Kindle is multi-purpose. Of course, it will be up to each of us whether we buy additional software. Personally, I am not interested in games, but would consider a well-reviewed genealogy program.
Ah, well, I didn't look into any of the extras since I haven't been very impressed with the Kindle's browser capabilities - still "experimental" in Amazon's eyes - and I was really only interested in its function as an eReader, anyway. I imagine you are a bit disappointed if you expected the Kindle to be a substitute for a laptop. On the other hand, hopefully you weren't expecting all that much for a $139-189 laptop!

Have you purchased any of the APIs available for the Kindle (if any - sorry, though the writer of the PC World article implies there aren't any apps, I personally have no idea if any are available or if they are still in the developmental stage) and, if so, did you find them useful?
