And we're still plagued with some magazines charging more for digital versions than they do for print versions:
  • Rolling Stone: print= $26/yr -- digital= $36/yr
  • Science Illustrated: print= $24/yr -- digital= $36/yr
  • Popular Science: print= $12/yr -- digital= $36/yr
I looked up rates for the magazines that I am interested in:

* National Geographic: $1.99/mo
* Science Illustrated: $2.99/mo
* PC Magazine $1.49/mo
* Elle $0.99/mo

I didn't even bother to check the print rates since there is no way that I can carry all these magazines and monthly issues with me in my purse. The pictures look fantastic on my NC. I have bought very few ebooks on B&N using the Classic Nook since it did not make sense for me to pay more than paper back just to lease the right to read a book on one device. Since I don't need to read the latest release, there are so many free ebooks in the public domain and the library for people to check out. However, the magazines are totally different as they are time stamped and reflect the latest information of what is happening in the world. I also want to preserve the vibrant pictures on my NC so I can share with friends and family. It is the COLOR and PORTABILITY that makes it better than the print copies. $1.99 an issue for "National Geographic" is really chump change. It is so worth the money so I gladly pay B&N to subscribe all of the above magazines and probably more in the future.

Yes, I played with it and it works well overall, but I can still see situations where you might want to pop a mag on to your laptop for a bit easier reading. I like reading mags on here though and will probably subscribe to a few of the more affordable ones like PC Mag.

Nat Geo was number one on my list, but no longer. Print= $15/year and digital= $24/year. I absolutely refuse to pay more money for digital versions of any print media.

Hey. Instead of waiting for black Friday, I see from your Avatar that you picked up the Nook Color.

I don't minding paying $8.00 more per year for 12 issues of National Geographic on my NC. I think it is a fair price to pay for the portability, convenience and the gorgeous color but I understand your point.

Don't have one, but I recall in one of the initial demo videos that the "pinch and zoom" feature works with magazines, so perhaps THAT is the way to read any articles that don't have the "article view"?

It got my attention at the time cuz it appeared that the "pinch and zoom" feature only worked with magazines, and not with books.

Well, it's close enough to Black Friday and all of the ads have been leaked, so I picked it up over the weekend. The girl at Best Buy said I was the 4th person she rang up and it wasn't even noon yet.

Still seriously considering an eInk device. The NC is heavy and the LCD still bothers my eyes a bit for extended reading; though it's better than my netbook.

Hmmm. I'm not seeing a NookColor ad for Black Friday. Only the classic. Usually, BB ads are national, and I'm a bit surprised you are able to get the BF price a week ahead of time without having to beat back the crowds at 5 am.

Or are you saying that you went ahead and bought it for $249 because it doesn't appear in any BF ads?

Being such a new product, I doubt there are any BF sales on it.

The NC isn't a BF item. I got it because there wasn't anything similar at its price point.

LOL. Yeah, I figured as much, but the way the question was asked and answered, it sounded like it was if you squinted your eyes and turned your head just right. Just wasn't sure why Black Friday was even mentioned in the original question.

Now I understand. Monkey was the one who initially mentioned the nook classic would be $99 at BB, but that you could probably get it online for that price if you were at your computer at 4 am. So the mention of the NookColor and Black Friday was merely an observation that Monkey didn't wait for BF for the classic and went ahead and got the color.

Whew. I'm sure everyone is pleased to know I am no longer confused -- for the next few minutes, anyway.

I don't know if you have a device which supports Zinio, but it is $15 there:

Just my netbook. Would love to see a Nook Color app, but B&N would never allow it.

Has anyone here viewed a Magazine that had full page photos, and were they able to zoom in/ enlarge the photo/image to see more detail?

What format are the digital Magazine in? PDF, EPUB, ????

thanks.

Back to the original subject: I've noted the same price discrepancies. I can understand if there is a difference in production for the NC that demands different pricing than an online version, but without knowing that for sure, the pricing does seem wrong.

I'm also not crazy about a "yearly subscription" that automatically charges your CC every month, one issue at a time... that's not what I call a yearly subscription.

Hopefully yearly subscriptions will eventually charge you once, and give you a real discount over monthly prices. Otherwise, the subscription model can't last, and people will go monthly... I can't believe the magazine vendors want that.
