mamasue said "wonder how many of 'em are v1.0????"

That was the thing I forgot to ask, what firmware version were the one's they had.
I hate upgrading firmware, I upgraded the modem/router firmware and ruined it beyond repair. I wonder how much Borders will sell the ko2 for, the Borders shop assistant I spoke to claimed she had no idea.

Just ask Kobo for an SD card with the firmware upgrade on the card. Simple easy and foolproof.

Thank you for that sabredog
I have seen references to the firmware in other threads but didn't really get it.
I have decided I am not going to buy a Ko1 even if it is only $109
the fact that the Ko2 has a faster processor makes me want to wait and see.
(plus the girl at borders said kobo is [edited] and I should buy a Sony)

I have both a Sony PRS-300 and a Kobo and they are both fantastic ereaders. The Kobo is not sh** by any means.

The Sony PRS-650 is nearly $300, twice the price of the Kobo so you expect it to be better.

Better being the operative word I have bought too much cheap nearly right technology. I have cupboards full of it. The Kobo is not exactly cheap in Australia Borders will want at least $190 for the new version. So I may as well pay $299 for a "better" Sony because I am not buying stuff off the internet anymore too many bad memories. The girl at Borders said they used sell a lot of Kobo's but when the new model Sony's came out they haven't sold, similar story to the Kogan ereader suddenly a complete lack of interest. I figure Sony will still be around long after Kobo is dead and buried under a pile of mobile sh*t.

In New Zealand they are STILL $249 NZD. They are sold through Whitcoulls who have completely dropped the ball and no longer seem to answer any queries or concerns and who have a useless expensive range of ebooks. I am hoping when the next firmware upgrade arrives that I can upgrade independently of Whitcoulls. And when I rang, they didn't even know a wifi kobo was available.

so how does that work sabredog?

does a person contact Kobo and then Kobo send an SD card to the customer?

I think that most of the Kobos left in Borders Aust are v1.0

We opened 5 of them last time I was in-store and they were all v1.0

I don't think there have been any shipments to Oz with the v1.4 already installed, but please don't shoot me if'n I'm wrong!

K1 is a Kindle 1. You'll need to find a new nickname for the original Kobo.

fair enough!

however I've seen many people refer to it (original Kobo) as K1

how about K1.0, K1.4, K1.7.1, K1.7.3, K1.7.4 etc etc

Yes, that is all you need to do. They are quite happy to assist in that manner.

Well go off and buy one of the Sony offerings then, instead of mouthing off here how much you dislike the Kobo.

You cannot expect members frequenting the Kobo forum to take your side when you come barging in and mouthing off.

To be honest, anything that gets people reading more is a good thing.

I'm confused. You'd rather not buy an ereader over the internet, or not use Ko2's* shop feature? If the former, you can get both Kobos and Sonys in stores (indeed, it seems that the reduced Ko1 is available only in stores now), and if the latter... the Ko2's shop feature seems little different than from any other method of buying ebooks, and is a poor reason to discount one ereader in favour of another. You'll still have to buy ebooks on the internet.

Also, Kobo is probably not going anywhere any time soon. I'd think that KoboBooks is still one of the best sources for EPUB books, if not ebooks in general, for Australians. As long as Kobo provides ebooks, people will always have an interest in their hardware.

I agree

except for the cost of Bryce Courtenay's ... a bit of a giggle actually!
