Amazon coincidentally (???????) announced today that they are going to offer this too.

If all the recipient needs is an email address, I see someone profitably exploiting this. Set up a small business to "give" ebooks worldwide and bypass geo restrictions.

Amazon, at least, has protected against that: "both the giver and the recipient must both reside in an area where the book can be purchased." I would imagine Kobo is the same, but I don't know.

Amazon's system is already up and running. Kobo's isn't. I think Kobo heard about Amazon's system and announced their own, without actually having one yet...

A handful of cash (in plastic form or otherwise) says "the calendar says I have to hand something over, so here!"

Mind you, I don't turn down incoming gift cards ... but I think I'd rather have one book someone really thinks I'd like than ten times its value in meaningless plastic. Or, for that matter, I'd rather have one handmade bookmark that means something. When we traded the personal touch for greed, I think we ended up with the worst of the bargain.

Hear, hear! I make all my gifts and I've never had a complaint. I know how I've felt when I've received a handmade gift - it beats something from the store hands down.

And don't even get me started about gift cards or workplace forced giving. Argh! Fortunately that's not the case where I work now, but once upon a time. . .

Well, it seems to fit the facts.

What's your theory - Kobo announced it, catching Amazon by surprise, but in one day Amazon developed the same product *and* took it live. While Kobo's product won't be live for a couple of weeks?

That's a good point, and it makes sense.

Just me, but I would much rather pick out the book I wanted, than one someone thought I wanted......
But with geo-restrictions, I'm wondering if I could gift an eBook to someone who could not buy it him/herself due to geo-restrictions. If I can, then that is one reason gifting could be better then gift cards. Also, it would be a way for people to legally purchase eBooks that they could not otherwise purchase. Just find someone to gift the eBook and voila.

I don't mind a store bought gift. But I'd like it to be something I've either asked for or something someone has put some thought into.

I am pretty good at gift giving. But sometimes it does take a while to find just the right gift that I can afford.

Oh, I certainly don't mind a thoughtful store-bought gift either.

Sorry if it seemed I was implying otherwise.

But I used to work at a mall and I can't stand to go near the places anymore - besides, handmade is more fun!
