I wouldn't have bought a Kindle if iPad had come out first. I got plenty of use out of my K2, though, so I don't regret buying it. It just sits around now.
I also have a Touch, so I can read and listen to music when iPad is too bulky (say, when standing on a crowded subway). Touch also lets me read without worrying about draining my iPhone battery. I don't have much gadget lust, though. I need a significant reason to switch at this point. For e-reading, my needs are being met. |

I bought the Kobo because it was the first reader I thought was worth the price, $150 at the time when Kindle was $260.
Kindle prices came down and people tend to give me Amazon gift certificates since I'm notoriously hard to buy for. I ended up paying $50 or so out of pocket for a K3, and since then I've received gift certs that have provided me a couple of ebooks for it. Most of my reading is still done on the Kobo, though, since it came with 100 public domain books and I can check out ebooks from the library with it. |

3 devices but I have different places I use them. I use the iPod touch as a convenient ultra portable device for when I'm somewhere killing time( like taking someone to an appointment or waiting for a bus). The Kobo is my backup and outside reader and I like it cuz it's light. The iPad is my go to device for pretty much anything.

Upgrading for me. I don't use more than one E-ink device at a time but listing them shows what I have first-hand knowledge of.

For me, it's where I'm at. I have the pocketbook 701 IQ which is great for when I'm out. I can get on the internet, read mail, play games or read a book. If I'm sitting around the house and want to read a book, I use my pocketbook 302. It has the vizplex screen which gives it a white background, more like a book. It's also easier on the eyes if I get trapped in a story for a long time.

I only have one device (PRS-505), but I plan on purchasing a larger device for reading PDFs at home (perhaps the Pocketbook 903). I would also like to upgrade my 505 to a 650 or 950, and would give my 505 to my husband or use it as a back up reader. I could never sell it. If I had money to burn I would perhaps pick up a Kindle as well. For me, it all really boils down to different devices being better at handling different formats (or handling certain formats at all).

I don't like the feel of a Jetbook, and it doesn't have the battery life of EInk. If I'm going LCD, I want full color too. |

I became curious about other devices and, in the case of the PB360 and the Jetbook, good deals were available on the MobileRead Flea Market, so I took the plunge. I might end up selling a couple of them, but I keep finding reasons to keep them. ;-)
I put several books on my EZReader Pocket Pro and lent the whole shebang to my sister. She liked some of the book so much she is buying them in hard copy. |

K2: my first e-book reader, went to my wife after the K3 was announced and I just "had" to get one. Initially the wife didn't want anything to do with e-books. (liked the smell of real books, the feel of turning pages, etc, etc....). However, now she "won't leave home without it!"
![]() K3:small and convenient to carry anywhere. Kindle DXG: I really like it for reading at home while seated in my recliner. The larger form factor is ideal for me. Just a nicer experience than the smaller format devices. NOOKcolor: OK, just had it for about a day, but my intentions are - reading magazines, reading kids books with my grandchildren. Should be real handy to look up something on the web when I'm in the living room, patio, etc. I'm sure that it will be much more convenient than using my laptop for things like that. NC also opens up access to formats not supported by the Kindles. As a side note, even though I'm 63, and use computers all day at work, I do not seem to have problems reading from LCD screens. I actually find myself reading Kindle books on my PC for an hour or so in the evenings before I decide to get more comfortable and go to the living room to read my KDX. |

iPads are a totally different beasts, and i personally do not count them into the "dedicated ebook reader" category, despite the fact that a sufficient number of iPad owners uses them predominantly for reading. It is a generic computing platform, it can do more, costs more, has different form factor and weighs more... The reasons for owning iPad in addition to a dedicated ebook reader are numerous. Same goes for Android based tablets, phones, or other devices that are used, in addition to other things, for reading. |

I could list five devices if I wanted to (the four I've owned and the one I'm getting for Christmas). A Kindle 1, a Kindle DX, a Sony PRS-600, a Sony PRS-350, and a Nook Color.
The reason for so many devices is because I've yet to find one that I ended up being happy with. The K1 proved to be too bulky in a cover and the corners far too pointy outside of the cover. I no longer read on it but I keep it as a means of getting my ebooks from Amazon. The DX proved to be much too big for my tastes (I gave it to my mom). The PRS-600 has a crappy screen which I was able to tolerate at first but I finally reached a point where I could no longer stand it, I'm currently considering the possibility of using it as a loaner. The PRS-350 was where the hunt should have ended but I do not like the touchscreen (the only way that I can get it to work consistently for anything other than page turns is to use the stylus, I hate that) and I am now convinced that nobody will ever be able to integrate a touch screen that I'd like with e-ink. I'm also done with e-ink, it's great in the sun, and when you have plenty of light indoors, but the indoor lighting at home just plain sucks, and I feel that I'm not only chained to the two places where there's enough light for decent readability, but that I have to sit in a way that allows the most light to hit the screen. I'm tired of not being able to read wherever I want and I am not about to use one of those annoying book lights. I'll end up having two Readers listed, the 350 will be used on my lunch breaks (I read in my car as there is no way I could possibly get any reading done in the break room), and I'll be using the Nook Color at home. |

I have three devices; a Nook (my main "Squeeze"), my 505 (for old lrx files and my Calibre catalog) and my iTouch when reading on my reader would be considered conspicuous and rude or merely inconvenient.
