Orbit's response
My question to Orbit: Does this book have to be read at Starbucks or can it be downloaded there for reading elsewhere? Do you know in what formats it is available?
Orbit's response: The Starbucks digital network books are only available while you’re in starbucks – the idea is that you can sample the book there. If you’d like to take it home with you digitally (which we hope you will!) it will be available for purchase from all major ebook channels that week as well. |

Ok,
Went to SB to test it out. You have to enter the bookish site thru the Starbucks Digital site, which is on yahoo, or you can't read it. Rather obviously, doesn't work on the Kindle (although you get all the way to the Read button, it doesn't do anything). It's an on-screen reader in the browser. Primitive controls - you can change fonts (three size), color and orientation. No zoom (so not good for maps or photos). Be careful not to click the "buy in ibooks" button if on ipad (or worse, the iphone/touch), as it is just next to the Read button. No idea if you even get a confirmation message or see the price first (hopefully, so; with this week's books at $10-$15, didn't want to try it). Only book I wanted to read this week: Oogy. Never did get it to open, just received content error messages. Other three opened; one I could read, but isn't one I would have sought out (although it is quite popular, as are the other two), the other two you probably couldn't pay me to read (ok, if it was a REALLY big pile of money, I can be bought, but otherwise....). Wonder if the Bear book will open next week? How much will it cost me in lattes (and the prices just went up, it seems) to read the free book (which I can pre-order for $10 and read at home)? |
