Thanks Jeremy, I have since received another email from Amazon CS and they are quite specific that I should ship the unit back to them pretty much immediately, there is no mention of waiting or that they will send any kind of shipping label. I will contact tham once more, but I think different rules may well apply to International customers.

Sorry Paul - my post wasn't clear! What I was referring to as having been "stated several times" in this thread was that the packaging that the replacement Kindle came in should be used to return the defective Kindle; I was not saying that it had already been stated that the old Kindle had to be returned.

Until you said it, I hadn't considered the fact that you might not receive the replacement Kindle within the 30 day return window that Amazon requires. You should query them about this - via email so you have a "paper" trail - and ask if there is an extension provided for over-seas customers. After all, it is up to Amazon to see to it that you get the replacement Kindle well within the required 30 days so that you have time to return the defective unit within the same window.

Thanks Holly for your kind response, I have been in further contact with Amazon CS and I do have to send it back at my own expense, which of course Amazon will refund me for, the first quote that I got was $300 to return it to the US! needless to say that was a little crazy, I got another quote from UPS - who are fortunately represented here in SA - for $180 which Amazon will cover, the whole thing is a little bit annoying, particularly as Amazon look after their US customers so well, but that's the price we have to pay for living in an economic backwater. Some days I wish I was living in the US! but C'est la vie. Here's hoping that I will receive my replacement in time for the Xmas hols at least, I have a lot of reading to catch up on and trying to read on my android phone is just not the same.
Cheers

I'm getting a replacement too, for Europe.
Amazon told me to wait till I have the replacement, and use the box they send it in to return my defective Kindle. They reinburse the shipping if I write the amount due on the outside of the package.

As it is an international Kindle and they want it cleared by customs as soon as it gets there; they charge me for the replacement on my visacard and reimburse it over the next few days.

As for speed of delivery: mine won't get here till 10-21 of january. Which is a long wait, I think.

I just got a replacement. They sent me a usb cord, but not the ac adapter.

They sent the new via FedEx and sent me a return label by email for me to print. I just put the old Kindle in the box. Only downside is that now I have to drive to a UPS outlet to send it back.

I am confused by a couple of comments above. I also live in Canada with a registered Canadian address

RE "I can access amazon.com which has a better selection of books as opposed to amazon.ca" .... I always order my books from amazon.com [agree - better selection] and they come through with no problem and no surcharge other than exchange

RE "trick is to download the file to your pc and load it to your kindle from there instead of using wispersync" ..... I always use whispernet and there is never a charge - if a book is free it is delivered with no extra whispernet charge - I never have them delivered to the PC - what is the sense of having whispernet
BTW - perhaps if you have a US address and use whispernet in canada then you are charged

Hi desertblues, I think we're pretty much in the same boat, with the exception of waiting for the replacement before shipping back, that wasn't an option for me, more to do with my location I guess than any other reason. But 10-21 January seems a little too long, I wonder if Amazon are having stock issues, because surely it should only take a few days to ship a kindle to anywhere in Europe? Notwithstanding the time of the year obviously.
Cheers

Yes, I think so too it shouldn't take that long. I inquired again at Amazon and they said they couldn't deliver any Kindle, now ordered, to Europe before Christmas.
I gather they'll send me a new one, not a refurbished.
Good luck with your next Kindle.

Emailed Amazon if they could send me the Kindle before January 2011----negative.
Phoned Amazon if they could send me the Kindle before January 2011-----it's coming at the end of November.

That's strange; they said to me they would charge it, but reimburse me after a few days. I have to sent the defective Kindle when I get the replacement.

edit; I just saw they charged it on my creditcard today, so they should reimburse it after the weekend. I'll keep a check on it.

What a difference a day makes! Apparently you get better results when you call than when you email; I hope you recorded the call.
And hopefully what Amazon CS told you last is what they will stick to!

Paulinafrica - $300 for shipping is outrageous, but $180 for shipping seems way too much as well - this is the cost of shipping something that is less than a pound in weight, imagine having to ship something more substantial! I've never had anything shipped to me from South Africa so had no idea that shipping companies charge so much.

gumhead, Paulinafrica & desertblues - I hope you all receive your replacement Kindles in good time and with no further hassles, and that your new ones are defect-free.

Hi Holly,
Yes, one telephonecall from overseas might make the difference. As I'm really lost, or think I am, without my ereader, I'm glad they'll send one to me at the end of the month.

My problem with the Kindle was, I think, a combination of a badly formatted book (Anna Karenina, not from MR/Feedbook) and the use of the Kindle as a library.
But still: it would have been nice, if the Kindle gives a kind of warning if it gets too full.

All's well that ends well, I hope. Next month is my birthday and as a present for that and St Nicolas (5 dec.), I ordered a second Kindle.
I now shall divide all my books between the two of them; for overcharging is not good at all, it seems.

To quote myself is weird perhaps but:
Amazon sent me an email that my replacement-Kindle is shipped+ trace&tracknr.
That is an unbelievable speed and good service.
All of a sudden I'm getting in the Christmas Spirit.
