I was in London this spring and had a chance to play with a working Sony reader in the library there. I don't remember the name of the library but it was the one with very big shelves filled with very large and old books on display. I had read about e-ink screen and when I saw how good it is, I immediately wanted to buy one. I got disappointed because I couldn't find a shop that sells them. As a tourist I had little time to ask in forums, so I checked all electronics shops nearby and around Victoria Station without any luck.

Some ebook stores do let you buy a book and gift it to someone. OmniLit/AllRomance allows you to do something like that. Maybe not exactly what you are describing, but close.

It looks like Kobo will have something like this in December. It may be US and Canada only. See: Give the gift of reading with Kobo.

I'm giving some as Christmas gifts so I ordered them very early worried about supplies. I've yet to wrap them because I play with them

"ebook gift cards"
"Missed it by that much."

Ebook SD Cards with a couple hundred public domain novels and a "gift card" for down load of a current book would be nice.
