I found this review on youtube to be quite useful

Wow is that screen clear. Where do you read about the technology and the info you described? I would like to understand the infrared and the pearl screen.

The link below is probably a good comparison for Pearl v/s the older screens. Since this is my first reader I really don't have a reference point, all I can state is that the screen on the 650 looks great

Here's about the optical touchscreen technology

http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-18438_7-20021924-82.html

And the fact that you don't really need to touch the screen is true, even the lightest of touches works like a dream , here's another video where you can see the reviewer making page turns by lightly brushing her scarf on the screen

Strange. I thought that it was using infrared sensors. I wouldn't expect the scarf to be warmer or colder than ambient conditions. I wonder how it works.

At first (maybe as they call the model "Touch" ?) I was really giving it a good swipe, but a few inadvertent page turns from barely touching the screen with a smaller quick swipe made me realize how sensitive it can be.

I had a two-column per page PDF that was a nightmare on the 505 -- either squint at the tiny Small font, or go to Medium, which shuffled the text between columns quite a bit. The 650's "quadrant" feature means I can easily read each page, with just a couple of extra turns.

I don't think temprature has anything to do with it, its more optical with a grid of infrared beams spanning the screen which then register the location whenever any object impedes their path. The CNET link above has an illustrative picture.

I know what you mean, but OTOH I guess calling it 'Caress' would be a touch too corny.

I should have read your earlier response more carefully. Thanks for being patient with me.

Thanks everyone, this information and links really explained it all.

So do you still have to use Calibre to make larger fonts like I have to with the 505? The large size isn't large enough on the Sony 505. The video said you have 6 size options on the 650. Are they sufficient for you?

I read most books in Small, and a few in Medium; the other sizes seem huge! The option for margin cropping helps fit more characters-per-screen as well.
