The email download system is pretty clunky, I agree. I suppose it might have something to do with verifying identity (sort of) by requiring the user to maintain a working email address in a particular domain, but it seems to me that would only be relevant if you used the email method of verifying identity.
Some of the titles I downloaded had ads for other content on pages at the beginning or end of the text. I haven't run into one in the middle of the text yet. For comic books/manga, full page graphic ads don't take up much of the total file size, but I hope for text content, e.g. novels, they use a less filesize-hogging format. The one text book I've downloaded (A.E. Van Vogt's Voyage of the Space Beagle) was fairly nicely formatted. I haven't loaded it onto my iLiad yet, but I think it will read well there. |

The Evolution of the Book (a subject we all around here might be interested in) by Frederick G. Kilgour is $42.75 at Amazon and free at Wowio.

The books are in letter sized PDF just so you don't go and think you can easily get readable books right away.

I was interested, until I saw they were using PDF. I can't stand reading PDFs on a screen, it's a printing format.

I got 3 books from Wowio, 2 were text, one image; the text ones work ok extracted to txt and improved with some tidy up program; the image one has to be processed as such with your favorite tool, since that book was sort of marginal for me, I never bothered.

I tried to convert one with images and most of the images came out in reverse. So I kinda gave up on that one. I don't think the time it takes to convert/remove all the junk is worth my time.

clearly, wowio is not really selling any ads, the books i looked at had few or no ads (or ads for wowio itself which is... pointless). the vast majority of books on the site are public domain. there are a few "real" books, mostly from rosetta. their press release about giving away "a million dollars worth of ebooks" was clearly weasel-worded, they were attributing a price to all the public domain books they "sold", which are available from numerous places free
this model was tried by bookface back in 2000 or 2001, it failed miserably, and the same will happen with wowio. |

I think the problem is that they're trying to build an ad structure by themselves, rather than working with something like Google Adsense. I still think this is a workable idea, just not the way they've set it up -- you can't treat it like print ads.

Nice post,
I happen to live in Germany and I would like to have a look at what Wowio has to offer, but I can't seem to find an email-address with .com which it accepts. I wonder if you could help me out there, I certainly would appreciate it. Regards Anthu |
