They justify that way, also you can add book cover thumbnails directly via Calibre.

You can remove the DRM once the books are on your computer, either using a Calibre plug in or a DRM removing tool. A Google search for ApprenticeAlf will take you to a blog that contains instructions and links.

Thanks for the responses. Since I can't really test before I buy...does anyone know if using all the tools described to convert from .modi to epub will retain the toc? I ask because most of my kindle books have been technical books (trying to learn linux) and I really cannot navigate without toc...so in general does the toc remain active in a converted .mobi to epub?

Yes. If the book is properly formatted, the toc will remain active in a converted .mobi to ePub.
