I installed Duokan and was not impressed.
1. First of all it's PDF reader is reader only - no notes, no highlighting and (i think) no bookmarking.
2. Secondly i noticed that the white in the pages is filled with ghost text from previous pages. Also the white on page looks like it's made up out of a lot of tiny but visible gray sqares/pixels - big matrix.
3. There is only one orientation Portrait Up

So, it might be a good option for some situations, but for some (like mine) - not.

On the whole it's great to see that there are other developers than Amazon's

Yeah, that's just a GUI error for the diskette icon, where clicking it incorrectly shows the open dialogue. Until that gets fixed, you can only get to the real save dialogue by clicking File --> Crop & Save (or key combo Ctrl+S). It automatically suggests a file rename, appending "_scissored" at the end of the original filename.

Your other reservations are valid, but I still love PDF Scissors for its simplicity.
