I'll give it a try later and report back. I also use Roadrunner and Hotmail for e-mail, will give both a try. I do recall having some set up problems with Roadrunner that caused me to just use the recommended and effortless (until now) gmail setup. I have my desktop set to wake itself early in the morning and start calibre to do its thing before going back to hibernate. I've never had a problem with NYT or any of the other feeds, WSJ only. This morning's NYT, which is larger than the daily due it being a Sunday edition, came through fine via gmail.

Thanks.

OK, so tried sending via Hotmail. Once I remembered to add that address to my Amazon account's approved senders list I was able to send first Dilbert as a control test and then WSJ. Both came through without a problem. I had the same headaches setting up Roadrunner that I remembered when I first started using calibre (test e-mails failed, probably a port # issue) so I let that one go.

So that should be another piece of evidence that the problem lies somewhere with gmail. Doing a google search on "gmail" (vaguely incestuous, I know) and "e-mail problems" for the past week of results shows that gmail had some problems with Android recently and that they reworked some code for Nov 9, which is right about when I first started having the problem with WSJ. Perhaps this is an unintended consequence of their recoding? Way above my pay grade.

Well, in any case, I can use Hotmail until the gmail issue is resolved. Thanks for the help.

A couple of follow up questions, and I apologize if they've been answered elsewhere:

1) Is there anyway calibre can show that an e-mail attempt is currently in progress? It took a few failed efforts my first time using calibre to realize that just because a job had been completed did not mean that I could close callibre right away and still find the feed had made it to my Kindle.

2) Is there a way calibre can send specific feeds to specific, different e-mail addresses? I can think of plenty of reasons why this would be useful to some users while undesirable to some content providers and therefore not a good idea as an included feature.

Thanks again!

Sigh, I really hope gmail gets fixed soon. The whole reason I put in the use gmail button is so that I would not have to guide an endless succession of people with how to setup their ISP's SMTP server.

FWIW, the gmail button sure helped me get calibre set up properly the first time.

Thanks for creating and maintaining this great program.

Thanks for such a great app! I'm using it with the Kindle 3. I did a search today and glad I found this thread. I've also just recently started getting this error for the Orange County Register and the BBC News. I'm using the latest Calibre version. I've been using gmail to send to my free Kindle email address. Here is the error. The email does appear in my gmail Sent box.

I disabled my AVG 9 virus protection and sending the 7MB NYT via Gmail worked. I re-enabled AVG 9 and sent the NYT again--it failed. I'm puzzled by this, but I did find another issue with AVG 9 when I installed it--the Surf Shield feature disrupts PHP sessions runing on a local IIS. I had to disable that new "feature" in AVG 9, and now I'm wondering if there's another "feature" in AVG 9 that is disrupting large emails being sent to Gmail. tjk--do you use AVG 9?

No, I use CA Security Center. I can give it a try with virus protection off tomorrow.

I'm now convinced this is an intermittant Gmail problem. I tried sending that 7MB NYT file again and it went through, with AVG 9 enabled. I don't think it has anything to do with calibre, AVG or Amazon.

Snoozing antivirus to resend this morning's WSJ had no effect. Pretty clear now that it's at gmail's end. I'll switch to Hotmail until they fix things.

P.S. - Even my Sunday NY Times was only 5.1mb and went through fine. Today's WSJ was 7.1mb. If gmail's problem involves file size I guess the tipping point is somewhere between those two numbers.

tjk - I tried hotmail with settings host name = smtp.live.com, port = 25 encryption SSL and calibre can't connect. Are these the server settings you are using?

smtp = smtp.live.com
port 587
TLS

Worked for me, though now I seem to be getting a reply from Amazon that there was a problem with delivery, which I did not get last night. Says no document was included.

(sigh)

Update: oops, I was mistaking the test e-mails for actual calibre output. I was getting error messages from Amazon on the documentless test e-mails, not calibre feeds. Sent them too close together so mistook one for the other. It works fine. To quote Emily Litella "Never mind!"

I'm having this issue with files as small as 2.5 MB - I believe it started after the .27 update. I use Gmail and can confirm that this did not happen before and everything does end up on the "server side", so I'm apt to think something may have gone subtly awry with the new Calibre update. No viral protection, either. Thoughts?

Since there have been no changes to the email code in a *long* time, I seriously doubt this is a calibre problem.

Well if there's a opinion to trust on the matter, it'd be yours Talk about service, that
s a heck of a response time.

Other than completely changing email services, are there any hard-and-fast recommendations? I had months of awesomeness whereby my iMac would wake up before me, download my news and it'd be waiting by the time I rose and shone.

Thanks again for all the help, hard-work and general awesomeness, Kovid.
Best,N.

I would suggest just setting up a free hotmail account for the task. Others in this thread have reported success with that.
