In the military I often read with explosions going on around me and that was ok. I think I'd notice now at home here though

Interesting read through the posts. People are unique after all.
I'm with the "explosion" party. Reading is my best noise canceling device. But don't you sometimes meet people whose voice you just can't ignore? In my life so far I can recall about 2 people whose voices always gets my head goes up searching. (Like that dog in Up! every time it hears squirrel) |

It depends a lot on the noise I'm trying to cancel out. I sometimes have to cycle through a few of the options on the white noise app to find something that covers up the ambient noise. It seems to be easier to cover up low pitches (music with a lot of bass, men's voices, car engines) than high pitches (women, children, phones ringing, territorial squirrels).

If you ever met my sisters and mother, Piper_, you would be giving me karma for not growing up to be a serial killer.

I used to be the "What explosion?" type of reader. Then I had kids. I can still read anytime, anyplace, at any noise level, but I'm aware of what's going on around me, too.
@Piper: My Texan mother used to tell telemarketers, "Slow down. I'm from Texas, we hear slow." |

I like (and voted for) the "what explosion?" category because that exactly describes how I am when I am reading a book. I don't notice anything!

I start reading, the rest of the world goes silent; no problem there then.

When I'm reading, I want it to be relatively quiet. No TV blaring in my ear, no screaming kids, and nobody yammering at me. My dh used to think nothing of interrupting my reading every 3.7 milliseconds to yammer at me about absolutely nothing. Then I decided to turn the tables by interrupting him frequently as he was watching TV. He got the point.

For most of my life I would read with something going on the stereo. In 1980, I read all of the Lew Archer stories to Mike Nock's In, Out & Around album.
But in recent years, I've changed, and I now want complete quiet. |

I used to be firmly in the urban reader category, but I'm finding as I get older I'm more easily distracted. Now I prefer some "normal" noises, but if it's too loud I can't concentrate. If it's too quiet I can't concentrate either though, so if I'm reading late at night I'll usually have the TV on loud enough to hear voices, but low enough to be able to ignore them.
