I just put mine to sleep, but I don't think turning it off will hurt it any. Just takes longer to bring it back up and be ready to read.
Regarding the 3G, I leave it off unless I want to download something. I think I get better battery life that way. But I have a K2, where the 3G makes a bigger difference to the battery life than for the K3. |

Sleep Mode better than Shut Down Mode
If you use the power button to turn off, using Sleep Mode requires less pressure on the switch than Shut Down Mode. Some folks have reported the switch failing. It could be the switch is sensitive to too much pressure.
In addition using Sleep Mode now for two battery cycles, I got 21 days on the first cycle and 31 days on the second cycle, both in Sleep Mode. If you use the Menus to turn off, then the effect should be the same, hardly noticeable no matter which Mode you use. |

I don't ever turn it off. The battery lasts anywhere between one and two weeks--this includes intermittent WiFi usage. My device hasn't presented any off-deprivation symptoms so far (like the ones you get when you don't reboot a windows computer after a while).
The reason I don't turn it off is because it takes a few seconds to turn it back on and I'm the kind of person that thinks that someone should invent something faster than a microwave! ![]() I guess the bottom line is that it is a personal choice. No harm either way. |

I've so far never turned mine off. I haven't even put it to sleep mode. When finished or having a break in reading I just lay it away and let the screensaver come on when the Kindle decides itself.
I'm into my 2nd charge, and the very first charge lasted 26 days with Wi-Fi always on and never actively put to sleep og switching off. I've downloaded (via Wi-Fi) just less than 100 books and read 5-6 books on the initial charge. Since I'm off with an airplane tomorrow morning, I've switched off the Wi-Fi for the first time now 1/2 an hour ago. ![]() |

I leave my Wi-Fi off most of the time but as for the device, I just close the cover I have for it and set it down. It goes to screensaver and I go and do whatever. So I suppose that would be no, I don't turn it off.

I have a Kindle 2 GW. In sleep mode it continues to index and sort things so if you have recently added a big number of books it will eat more battery and even your Kindle may got "battery empty" message soon. Putting it off will prevent this but after start it will continue to index and sort. I even have read an advice to keep Kindle connected to the USB or power adapter after adding big amount of content (but after disconnecting it from USB via Safe removal if you had to charge it via USB - it start to index after disconnecting). After adding approx. 850 books at once I had my Kindle 2 (and my friend's Kindle 3 too) discharged in 3-4 hours. Have you noticed similar discharging?
P.S. It means adding files to the 'documents' folder. Using Calibre may have indexing done via the Calibre in the PC. I don't use Calibre. Last edited by enkov; 11-07-2010 at 01:31 PM. |

I only use off instead of screensaver mode so I can keep the screensaver disabled. That has kept it from falling asleep when I was interrupted from reading - and that keeps me from having to use the slider so much to wake it up. I don't think it matters, except for user choice, and some battery saving while in off as opposed to standby. If you turn it on and off a lot, that advantage likely disappears. So I really think it all just depends on how a person wants to use it. Quote:
Maybe I'm overlooking it, but the only thing I see or have read about is one for "restart". That's an actual shut-down reboot. (Waking it from off takes no longer on mine than waking it from sleep. Rebooting takes over a full minute.) |

I'm not concerned about battery replacement, as it seem easy enough from the video that I watched so I just let the device go into standby mode. I'll replace the battery in 4 or 5 years and will figure it out at that time. After all I have 5 years to fugre out how to replace the battery, although I wish that it was user serviceable like the Nook is.

No, you will NOT replace the batter !

I bought a Sony PRS 900 last December and its already obsolete. Kindle 4 to be introduced next year will make 1, 2 and 3 totally useless. So far I'm spending far more on eReaders than eBooks. LOL. I like new gadgets. I buy dedicated electronic bibles each year as well and the prior year version is also made obsolete. That is the technology way. Finally, its true one can only do a Restart (reboot) from the Menu on the Settings Screen - not a Shut Down. However, I leave WiFi on all the time and use sleep mode and still got 20 days on my first battery cycle and 31 on my second. I'm using MP3 music now so my third may get less. I read for 2 to 3 hours daily in one or two sessions. Last edited by sirmaru; 11-07-2010 at 10:26 PM. |

Based on my sony PRS-505 I will have my K3 years down the road. I purchased my sony PRS-505 4+ years ago. I'll replace the battery in that when t goes bad to. Unless something remarkable comes out within the 4 years (like color E-Ink) I don't see myself getting rid of the K3 any time soon.

Imo turning it off doesn't help it any. When its displaying the screensaver (and wireless is off) its not doing anything (unless you've added a lot of books, but it will index those sometime)
Turning it off forces it to boot up, which takes a lot of power as the processor is taxed fully, just waking up from sleep is like turning a page ![]() Turning it off "might" be usefull if you're not going to touch it for a long time (read: weeks) although I've had mine on sleep mode for a week or two and it was still pretty fully charged. |

i say just put it in sleep mode.. e-ink is different from lcd in that it only consumes energy when you're turning pages, so leaving it in screensaver mode doesn't consume energy... or so i've heard.
while rebooting takes alot of juice. |
