I seriously considered an extended warranty for my 505 when I got it, because I'd heard how 'fragile' the screens are. Ended up not getting one, but a good M-edge case instead.

Then I dropped the darn thing in the parking lot.

One very minor, almost unnoticeable ding. After that, I stopped worrying about it. The thing is pretty darn rugged.

So I say no to 1 and yes to 2. I can't recommend M-edge covers highly enough.

The problem with note-taking with a stylus is that eink doesn't refresh quickly enough. You're not going to get the same kind of feedback while writing that you do on paper or even an LCD screen. It's kind of like writing with your eyes closed.

That's just how it is with the technology at this point.

I don't know if it's true of all extended warranties for the new readers--but it's not only warranties purchased directly from Sony. If you buy a 650 from B&H Photo for example, the extended warranty that they sell also covers "accidental damage from handling". They over both two and three year extended warranties.

Note--both the extended warranty I purchased and the warranty offered by B&H Photo don't cover "normal wear and tear". They cover accidental damage--for example dropping the reader.
