I have 4096 books currently on the internal storage, with no slowdown.

I added them in batches of a couple of hundred at a time then just forced the 650 to thumbnail them (by going to book list, viewed by thumbnail and sorted by date added and clicking next page until reaching the end of the latest batch before loading the next batch).

I tried the same technique with an SD card but the device got very sluggish very quickly: By just using internal storage and forcing thumbnailing initially I'm now seeing no slowdown in the device's response rate.

Having too many collections can, in my limited experience with the 650 so far, also cause the device to become sluggish, and even to crash/reboot itself. I've only seen that happen when the number of collections has exceeded about 800 to 900, though.

The question I have is whether PRS + will solve any problems with lag due to its folder based system of organization. Any ideas?

It will mainly deal with the problems with the SD-Cards.
With PRS+ you can disable the scanning of SD-Cards. This way the books on the card are simply not seen. They will not show up in any of the "normal" book-views. To access them, you have to use browse-folders.
Since v2.0.x kartu has managed to open a book direct form SD, so it is no longer neccessary to copy the book to IM before it could be read.

That seems like an excellent solution, in fact it is just what I was hoping for. I assume that with this setup one could actually put 32gb of stuff on a card and have no ill effects. Wonderful!

I currently have 283 books on my PRS-650, and it's still working find, so long as you follow slantybard's suggestion to force the reader to generate the thumbnails.

I have about 550 books on the main memory of my prs-650 and it seems to operate fine; I don't notice much lag when going to the main screen and the pages turn quickly when reading.

I have 2600 books on one SD card

I've got 2600 books on a Sandisk Extreme; it works fine, searches fast in books and collections... but yes, the Home button and initial poweron take awhile.

I also only use the text views of books; titles or list.

I'm good with that, and I almost never shut it down anyway.

With PRS+ (custom firmware) you could have as many books on your SD/MS card as you like, without waiting them to be scanned, if you switch off "scanning".
