Yeah, that's the main reason I went with the Kindle instead of the Sony (price was 2nd reason). Often times, late at night because of my job, I'm out riding around in a big red truck and I pull out my Android phone and try to read as much as I can. When I get back to the station and open up my Kindle, I'm on the same page. ...and I don't get all my books from Amazon.

Can either of you give me any quick pointers on how this is done? While I'd like to sync bookmarks and notes, syncing "last read page" would be good enough for me.

Is the fix, as I've read, simply a matter of removing any margin-left directives in the epub's css before converting? Or something more than that?
It could be as easy as that or not. You cannot remove all of the left margin directives all of the time as some of them are there to be indented more. So in order to avoid the left margin issue, you will have to go in to most ePub and basically make the margins to none. It's what I do anyway because I prefer reading with no margins and the 650 is not a problem at all with no margins.

The touch screen is very nice. And to get to the dictionary, double tap a word and it brings up the definition at the bottom.

Use MobiUnpack to extract the html file, fix your spelling mistakes in that, then use Mobipocket Creator to repack them into a mobi file. In all the ones I have done it with I have had to add this line to the top of the html file:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />

Changing line and paragraph spacing is beyond me at the moment, but Calibre seems to do a good job of epub to mobi that retains most of the settings from the css file.

Quick?... yes. Easy?... depends on you (and your computer setup).

I use the MobiPerl Tools to manipulate the header records.
As long as external header record 113 contains a valid Amazon ASIN number and exth record 501 (cdetype) contains 'EBOK' instead of 'PDOC', I have no trouble syncing "furthest read point" between devices with non-Amazon mobi's.

Oh, yeah - I went a little overboard with saying "any," I guess. I would have figured that out eventually. I prefer a slight margin on my ebooks (mainly just to keep the text out of any shadows that might be thrown by the raised edges).

I've just taken a look at the MobiPerl tools wiki, and combined with your description it looks pretty straightforward.
