I love my ipad as well. No its not a multifunction computer but could be. With a usb port the world would open up to possibilities. If it had a usb port that would allow hd storage (outside of itunes), cd/dvd burner for ripping/burning cds and DVDs, and printer connection (one port to a hub) then you could have a keyboard doc and a full function computer to take on the run. I'd install pages and numbers and forget microsoft existed!! But they left out just enough capabilities such that a full computer is required to take advantage of it.

Get a camera connection kit and plug it in, hey presto you have a USB port. Without drivers to support the devices you want to connect to it, it doesn't do anything. |

PS I've heard that the iPad (via the connection kit) also supports USB headsets and microphones, though I don't have any way to test this personally. |

And they work now, which is what I said about plugging in the camera connection kit.
The reason other things don't work isn't because the iPad doesn't have a USB port, it is because Apple don't want them to work, that is the real constraint. |

You can easily access any kind of file wirelessly depending on which app you use. I use air video and zumocast to access videos stored on my desktop. I use filebrowser to access ebooks and other types of documents.

Does VLC support Open In... From other apps? If so you could download the file with GoodReader and then transfer it to VLC. |
