How did you find going from screen to screen and homepage to homepage? Smooth or choppy? Thanks

Smooth. Here and there I'd think "This could be a little bit faster with better software..." but main functions were fast. I was really impressed with scrolling on the web browser.

Jumping to the main page was near instant. It's nice that the big "n" is now a physical button. One press, home screen, two presses, back to whatever you were reading.

High resolution magazines took a little bit to turn, but again, I didn't have the final version. Article view is a real sweet idea.

Overall speed, I'd say good. With the final version of the software and updates, it should be very fast.

To follow up on this point, what's the PDF reader like?
I.e. can you:
1. zoom pdfs (and/or view full size and simply pan across it with your finger)
2. read in landscape mode,
3. annotate and highlight,
4. follow pdf links (within the file - not web),
5. follow web links to the nook browser?
6. Embedded font support?

In other words, is it more like PDF reader on a real computer or a crippled one like on the classic nook?

I don't know about all of those, but I remember something mentioned about editing some types of files. Landscape and portrait mode are supposedly coming to everything but may not be in 1.0. I think zoom has to be there, it's there for magazines.

I don't know about annotating a PDF... You should be able to download a PDF from project gutenberg or something like that and be able to open it up.

It's way, way ahead of the e-ink nooks.

Doesn't sound like it as far as PDF support is concerned. Frankly, I'm not impressed this time round with B&N's promises that "future firmware releases" will solve problems - I fell for that last time. Still waiting for that to happen for the most basic things on the nook classic. The vaunted potential of Android remains just that - potential.

Anyway, thanks for the information and don't mind my bitterness - it's not directed at you.

Ditto on the cat hairs question!

What was the feel of it when held? Light, heavy, did it feel clunky or unevenly distributed?

Page turns - stroke screen, tap screen, or both? ie. was it kind of like an iPad, or more like a Palm TX?

I freely admit I am getting this as both a probable replacement for my Sony 505 and as an iPad alternative - I mostly read ebooks and fanfiction, and so I am hoping the wifi and internet browser will support this usage.

Oh, Mare, have you seen the Fanfiction Epub downloader? It's awesome for downloading from ff.net, Fictionpress, and Fictionalley, so you don't need to be online to read your fic. http://fanfictionloader.appspot.com/

i need to wait to see what it supports in the way of:
-pdf annotations, highlighting, notes, exporting notes
-support for pdf/a and 'text under image' pdfs.
-width and height of the actual screen, in inches
-weight of the device?

I have heard of it - haven't used it yet since I enjoy the hunting for a good writer aspect of fanfics - that, and the irritating need to move the files from my computer to my Sony. I am hoping that the Nook color solves several dissatisfactions with my current setup.

Does anyone know if the Nook color still has to be slaved to a PC, or is it finally independent?

No nook is slaved to a PC. When you connect a classic nook (wifi, or wifi/3g) the computer just sees the Nook as a USB drive. It isn't slaved to a particular computer and can be used on any computer whether it runs windows, linux, mac os, bsd, android, or any other system that supports USB 2.0 drives.

I personally have side-loaded books on to my nook from 4 different computers, each running a different OS. (1 fedora, 1 ubuntu, 1 os X, 1 winxp)

Does anyone know what the loop is made from and how it is attached? From the videos and pictures it looks metallic, and it looks like it goes all the way around? Confirmation of it's construction would be good!
If it is sturdy, I wonder if you could snap it on a carabiner suspended from the cieling in the kitchen for using as a cookbook.....
