Bernard Cornwell's works also include Sharpe's Adventures, a series (novels and short stories) that charts Sharpe's progress in the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars. The stories are the basis for an ITV television series with Sean Bean that ran in the nineties. |

Something else was in the back of my mind but I couldn't quite put a finger on it. Now I checked my reader at home and found out with a laugh:
Of all people Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote two books about a fictional french napoleonic soldier. The Adventures of Brigardier Gerard and The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard. You'll find the public domain titles over here at feedbooks e.g. |

I adore Dudley Pope's books. His main series is the Ramage books, set during the Napoleonic wars. Think Hornblower with a bit more self-confidence (but not as much as Aubrey! ![]() His other series, for those earlier in the thread who asked for something a bit different, are the Yorke books. The first four are set in mid-16th Century Jamaica after the English Civil War and are about a privateer called Ned Yorke. The next two are about a descendant of Ned Yorke's and set during World War 2. As for PD naval fiction, one of my eternal favourites is Captain Blood, set during the late 1600s. And it is, of course, available in the MobileRead library. |

Other good authors of books (naval) of that era are Alexander Kent (Douglas Reeman) and Dewey Lambdin just to name a couple.
Good reads, all of them! Last edited by sabredog; 12-23-2010 at 09:06 AM. Reason: a really dumb mistake! |

Bernard Cornwell is a great author. His Sharpe series (I haven't read all of them, though) is awesome.

I am trying to be a little different and set my books around the wars rather than in them as i think that has been done to death.

Naomi Novik's Temeraire series is worth reading. It is an alternative history/fantasy take on the period, but it does a great job of exploring many of the cultural, political, and military issues in the world at that time. It is very imaginative, and a lot of fun, if you don't mind a few dragons mixed in with your history
