You could always use your finger or if you don't want smudges a lite tap or swipe with the fingernail works as well.

Sometimes, though, when I am entering a lot of taps, letters, or numbers, my fingers tend to hit multiple choices; thus, the more accurate stylus is handy in this case. For page turning, I find the page turn button to be better than a finger swipe.

You could use a stylus from another device, like an old Palm Pilot or a Nintendo DS Lite. They won't fit in the tiny Sony silo, tho. I have the wacky notion of asking a friend of mine who does silver casting to make a sterling silver stylus for me. I wonder how much that'd cost? Probably less than Sony charges for the aluminum one. |

I don't like the stylus on my reader as well. I hate it... So much so that it takes away the beauty of the reader for me. So I sold the special edition to my friend, and I'm just gonna go order the 650 instead. Hopefully that stylus will look like the one on the 600. Last edited by envy; 11-11-2010 at 10:41 PM. |

Any old PDA stylus should do nicely, though. I had a replacement one for my handspring visors back in the day that had a springloaded tip so that it would not damage the screen and a ballpoint pen on the other end under the clip.

The 650 stylus seems quite sturdy, although I'm a bit hyper-cautious with it after reading this thread!

The barrel of the 650 stylus itself is metal -- like a pen's ink barrel; it's not painted. The bottom tip is gray plastic, and the top plastic part is black, a solid plastic that is unlikely to snap off accidentally.

I guess I'm not seeing that one is more sturdy than the other. I'll have to go look at a 650 stylus again.

If my stylus were to break, I can already visualize how I could make a new one from raw materials I have in my garage. I would cut a piece of the steel rod stock that I have left over from tuning my CB antenna, and mold the perfect shape of plastic ends from sugru (http://sugru.com/). I think I would use the orange sugru because it would make the stylus easy to see.

How do these styluses typically "break"? Does the little clip part snap off, or the whole top (black) piece from the metal barrel? I can't see either happening (easily) with normal usage. |

UGHH MY STYLUS BROKE AGAIN!! so oh so annoying.. To be 100% honest I used the new replaced stylus at the most 4 times for less than 1 minute... it hasn't even been out of the holder! Then on a road trip I let my daughter 'draw' a bit and within 2 minutes it was broken. I am pretty sure she didn't break it, because the stylus for the prs600 wasn't this fragile.. but this is RIDICULOUS... I have to call Sony Cust Service again this week. I hope they have made a newer design change to address this flaw. Last edited by tvuongpham; 04-25-2011 at 01:35 AM. Reason: added details of break |
