I'm a dedicated lefty, but have no problems at all with handling my Kindle.
I always hold it in my right hand, so my 'good' left hand can be used for complicated things like eating, drinking coffee, petting my cat or ' what! I have to get out of that bus right now'!

I have the DX, so I spend most of my time trying to prevent the device from breaking my wrist, as for the joystick... how often do you really have to use that thing anyways?

I'm left-handed. I grew up and prospered in a right-handed world. Of course, that meant I had to be more adaptable than the poor right-handed folks. A woman asked to use my computer and as she sat down I told her I was left-handed. She looked and promptly moved the mouse to the right side of the keyboard. Fine.

"The buttons are wrong."
"No, they're not. I told you I'm left handed."
"Well, change them."
"No."
"You don't understand how awkward it is."
"Oh, I think I do since I'm left handed and the world is right handed. I think I have a friggin clue."

No left-handed person who has survived 18 years has a major problem. They learn to be at least minimally ambidextrous.

Can't the K3 be turned upside down so that the buttons are on the left? I know you can with the DX.

I'm a lefty and used to mouse with my left hand until I realized that if I use my right hand I can still write with my left hand (take notes).

If I really need to use my Kindle only left handed it's easy enough to change the screen orientation to either keyboard on the left or keyboard top to move the D pad to the left hand side.

Smile Being Left-Handed in a Right-Handed World...

Hello, All.

Out of six children (4 girls and 2 boys), my brother and I are the only ones who are left-handed. I eat, write, cut and iron left-handed, however; I do everything else right-handed.

As to using my Kindle, it just sort of naturally went into my right hand and I've had no problems using it that way. I'll hold it in the palm of my right hand and use my thumb to press the page turn keys.

Works pretty good for me that way...

Regards,

Vandy

I'm another lefty--looks like I'm in great company here--and I have no problem using the K3. Even though most electronics and other items are designed for the 90% of lesser intelligent folks who got stuck being right-handed--just being humorous --I don't have much trouble adapting. The one glaring exception is cameras, but I can use them.

I'm sorry it didn't work out for you, but I take it you are pleased with your Nook. I am right handed and I hold my Kindle in my left hand and turn pages with my left thumb and as I seldom use the 5-way controller, I didn't really think of it being a primarily (in your view) right-handed device. My brother is left-handed, so I have long been aware of how "right-handed centric" our world is. On the other hand (no pun intended, really ):

My partner is disabled and has little use of her right hand - she was right-handed before becoming disabled - so now has to do most everything left-handed. I realize the design is a bit different from the Kindle 3, but she has a Kindle 2 and has no problem with using the controls on the right side. The Kindle was wonderful for her - she had pretty much stopped reading because it was so awkward trying to hold a paperback or hardback and trying to turn pages, now she is back to reading every day.

Holly

I have no problems using the Kindle 3.
I'm lefthanded and have 60% functionality in my left thumb and about 20% functionality in my right thumb. Still, I've perfectly adapted to the righthand world to the extent that I have been in need for.
Of course, I have lefthanded scissors, wine opener, gravy boat and such. But still use the PC mouse on right side, and since we drive on the non-left side of the road, I have to operate the stick shift with my non-left hand.

Then again, my wife and I have our armchairs arranged so my (single malt )whiskey glass conveniently grabbable by my left hand and her liqueur glass to her right side.

But for the Kindle, there's no problem none whatsoever to use/hold/operate for a "superleftie" as myself.

You did realize that by putting in landscape mode, the buttons could all be on the left?

I'm a lefty, but as you mention, using the mouse on the right has been great for me because of the ability to write with the left as well... Admittedly, I had no choice when I learned to use a mouse as they just didn't provide that option in those days. I can and have used a mouse with my left hand, but I find it inconvenient for the reason mentioned.

The Kindle is manageable for me. I don't find I prefer either hand and just use it as the buttons are. I guess that is how I approach things in general when it comes to right and left.

It sounds as if you have your priorities completely straight!

One day I should try a left handed scissors but I would probably maim myself and wind up right handed!
