Thanks for the reminder about backing things up. Without having my computer crash, I've lost whole chapters just by forgetting to save! Gonna back up what I'm working on right now!

That's interesting. I can't force it, I get a third of the way into a novel and may have to wait up to a year to sort out what happens to my liking. That said, I also think that if I was a kept woman (with no small people) and every day spread out before me like a leisurely vista, I probably wouldn't write much more. I thrive if I have to fight to write. It's too much of a fight at the moment 3 hours a week is not enough - but even so, my most productive time was just after junior was born and up until about two months ago when he dropped his mid day sleep.

Cheers

Inspiring thread. Thanks everyone! I'm trying to prime the pump here..

Those of you that have word quotas per day, do you consider those "finished" words or "draft" which will come back and edit exclusive of the daily quota?

Not to get too far off topic, but... William, just checked out The Invasion on Amazon. -- That is your most recent novel? Definitely grabs the reader for the first!

When I'm inspired, I can write about 1500 words a day, but, usually only 2 or 3 days at a time. There are days where I can only write one page, and sometimes only a week where I can write a page. Which is why I'm probably never going to do that NaNoWriMo thing, since I can't seem to write under pressure.

It's not the quantity, but the quality that counts, right? So you can excuse yourself if slower means the latter becomes true.

I'll write 20,000 words in a weekend and then nothing for three months... but the characters never leave my head and keep pestering me.

Draft, but my drafts are fairly polished. I generally write new stuff at night and edit it the next morning.

Yes, my word quota is definitely first draft stuff. I have a backlog of stuff to rewrite. I figure the longer I leave it before I look at it again, the better.

No quotas or schedules for me, as I have a wonderful life and a wonderful wife, and I don't want to push them aside just so I can write.

All the same, I've found the time to write over a dozen novels, as well as doing cover design, web design to sell them, and a tiny bit of time left over for promotion. I just create when I can, usually a few hours a day when I'm fully into a book... I don't track word counts, it depends on where I am in the project.

Right now, no books being written... but all of my books are being proofed, and possibly rewritten, for re-release on my new site.

I used to write about a page a day, but I've come to the final chapters of my 3rd book and I've hit a wall. I can't seem to come up with an ending.

What? Oh No! I feel for you. And not to make it worse, but surely you know you have to have the ending in mind before you write the first word!!!!

I sympathise, I have to wait ages sometimes for ideas to resolve themselves but I find they always do, if I'm prepared to hang around long enough. Don't stress - yeh, I know, easy for me to say.

Not really, writing is something I love doing, it's the only thing I get to do with my intellect any more, I have to fight to do it and after enough time, so long as I'm not so knackered I can hardly stand I can bash off stupid amounts of stuff in a few hours because it's been stuck in my head for so long it's burned into my brain. It's like copy typing. I write because I have to, because I'll go insane and mental if I don't. Writing time, for me, is like unicorn sh*t. so if it comes, I fall into it with open arms and lose myself in the therapy.

Cheers

MTM
PS Not too melodramatic about that am I? ;-) Not enough time to write right now, me thinks...
