The number 1 advantage of the lighted cover, compared with an external light, is that the light goes out when you fall asleep and the Kindle goes into sleep mode. This really is extremely useful.

Good point! Perhaps you should choose more exciting books, however? :-)
As much as I hate to pay that much for a cover and light, it might be worth the coins. I'm still searching for an alternative cover and book light, but I'm weakening .... |

A nice M-Edge case, one that can use thier light, and the light itself, are a good price, then a few Charged up "AAA" rechargable batteries (Say 4) will last you far above what you specify,
One might do it, 2 would, 3 or 4 would give brilliant peace of mind, hey and the quality is great too ! |

My solution was to buy this light and a cheap $10 synthetic leather case from eBay. You can get either the style with four loops of elastic/leather in the corners or more protection that covers all but the keyboard, screen, and page advance buttons. Total cost: about $14. Not as stylish, but much cheaper, plus the light can be used with other books. I've read probably 30-40 hours with that light and the batteries haven't noticeable weakened. You can get packs of replacement 2032 size batteries cheap via eBay or similar sites.
One other note: the light I linked to spreads the light more evenly around the screen; I acquired the lighted Kindle case with my used Kindle 3 but ended up selling the Amazon case because of the uneven spread plus the case is still really valuable. ![]() |

The Kindle Lighted Book cover is a bit heavier than bringing a separate book light. I have Travel flex Mighty Bright book light aside from my hotpink Kindle Lighted book cover. It's much better to hold long hours of reading than the Kindle Lighted Book cover. But having the built in book light is very convenient too, especially if you misplaced or lost your separate book light.

...which brings up another question:
Can the Kindle cover light be removed (detached) when not needed and the cover used separately from the light? |

Thanks, guys. Thinking of getting the protective cover w/o the light. I can find LED lights that work better and don't suck battery power from the Kindle out in the wilderness.

I measured current draws of the cover with light. According to my calculations it would drain Kindle battery after about 20 hours of non-stop use. Read here for detailed explanation: Kindle 3 Battery

I figured someone would be able to measure the lighted-case's draw. So, if someone read after dark for about two hours a night, it might last about 10 days (I don't know much about battery recovery when not used or if it would be of any consequence).
Now I just have to weigh it on a scale and have someone weight the non-light case for more details. I weighed the lighted cover just a bit ago. Lighted Cover weighs: 7 3/4 ounces or 222 grams Just for kicks, I weighed my Kindle3. It weighed 7 7/8 ounces or 224 grams I figure for hiking/backpacking, again, a case or shutter that protects the screen is still necessary. I guess a sheet of titanium might be a nice shutter if one can find such a sheet. Last edited by FF2; 10-30-2010 at 01:41 PM. Reason: To supply weight of lighted case. |
