MobileRead staff can give negative karma, but I'd think it's more likely that the negative karma was on at some point in the distant past, and you're seeing an artifact from that past.

Banned users usually just show as "banned" or not at all, as far as I know.

whoa, must've been a pretty gnarly person to get kicked from this forum. Thankfully, have yet to see someone who qualifies in this category!

Mostly it's spammers who get the axe. I've only ever heard of one actual person getting banned, and that was in the dim past, before the cooperative and congenial atmosphere of the forum was so firmly established.

Users won't see most spam and the person creating the spam is not here to participate in the forum or read. Just to advertise stuff for sale in a very suspicious manor. So banning said spammer is no loss to the forum at all.

I never understood the karma bit in the forum. Thanks for all the information provided, maybe I will get some karma in the future, I sure will remember to share some with others.
