If I'm any example, one can't count purchases as readers, either. I can count two hardcovers and at least five paperback books on my shelves that I've purchased over the last few years and haven't read - (Franzen, Murakami, Gaiman among them).

On the other hand, I've read every free ebook that I've downloaded that turned out to be worth reading after the first few pages or chapters.

But maybe I'm not representative of the typical human.
