Gee I wish I had those resources when I was reading the novels, it would have made things a lot easier to understand. I am going to have to get some digital editions of the novels since I require everything in digital form these days and I did not know about digital books in those days.

I would like to bring back this thread for the purpose of asking some questions about Warhammer novels of forum members. What ebook formats are Warhammer novels available in? What is your oppinion of the writting in warhammer novels? I read Warhammer novels at one time and might go back to them.

I started with Horus Heresy this week after a good pen&paper session (my first W40k)
So far it is as good as can be expected. It is a shared world so novels are a little more on the entertainment side (all novels are about entertainment but I am sure sf&f readers would understand what I mean). Among other shared-world novels (I am only on the second book of the series) they are good. Not Netheril Trilogy or Starlight & Shadows good, but better then most. Definitely best in sci-fi in their game book genre. I recommend it. The game we played was Deathwatch by the way, interesting stuff. GM was really into it and told us the world's story for 2 hours. That was what drew me in. |

Quote:
Space Wolf Omnibus - describes the making of a space marine and is really accessible for newbies. Gaunt's Ghosts series by Dan Abnett - get the omnibuses cheap used ('The Founding' first I think). Any of the short story anthologies eg 'heroes of the space marines', 'fear the alien'. Just use Amazon to find what others have purchased with this kind of title. Eisenhorn Onmibus by Dan Abnett - can't go wrong with DA. Stories about a psychic Inquisitor fighting the forces of chaos. Imperial Guard series - generally excellent military scifi. It's generally a fair bet that whatever you pick up will be a decent read. The only BL author I really dislike is Henry Zou (Bastion Wars series). It's all to do with how much background knowledge you have. You probably know enough from reading this thread to get you through any of the above recommendations to be honest. |

'Historical' Warhammer however is a different beast. I feel that much less background information is necessary if you've read any fantasy fiction before. For a newcomer to Warhammer, I'd recommend:
Gotrek & Felix 1st Omnibus Tales from the Old World Anthology Empire Army series Sigmar series (Graham McNeill) I prefer the 40k Universe though. |

I'm reading the Space Marine Battles series 'Legion of the Damned' at the moment. I am loving these books.
I will probably give the second book in Nick Kyme's 'Tome of Fire' trilogy another bash as I have been given a copy of the final book. It was a hard read for me due to all the names etc. |

I would suggest reading the other Warhammer 40K novels before the Horus Heresy ones. The Horus Heresy is a historical event in the WH40K universe, ten thousand years prior to the 'present' which pretty much defined the current Imperium and represents its fall at the peak of its power. Whilst it's been part of the WH40K canon for over twenty years, the Heresy wasn't described in much detail until these books came out. There's a lot in the books that alludes to WH40K history and to things in the 'present day' or describes in detail things that had only been the stuff of myth, rumour, the Imperial Cult and conjecture before.
In other words... it's like watching Star Wars Episodes I, II and III before the original trilogy, if that makes any sense. You can enjoy them, but you won't get the most out of them unless you have knowledge of later events. I've been into WH40K for over twenty years since the first edition, so I love them (with a few exceptions). Last edited by dworth; 04-07-2012 at 09:56 AM. |

Same here. I have still got the original novels in paperback form;
Deathwing, Inquisitor, Space Marine etc The whole WH40K universe has evolved over the last 20 years. Gone are the brightly coloured miniature armies, sqauts etc. All to be replaced by a grimmer, more gothic and dismal future. I do enjoy more stories involving the Imperial Guards, particularly the stories by Dan Abnett. However, like all big franchises the ratio of good authors and bad ones reduces somewhat. |
