For an example of softer materials similar to (but not the same as) the material that Kobo's d-pad is made of you could look at the buttons on some TV remotes, the analog sticks of Sony and Microsoft game controllers, scroll wheels on mice, and anything that uses rubber "chiclet" style keys. I have a Yamaha DX-100 synthesizer from the mid 80's whose selection/programming buttons are made of a soft rubber similar to the Kobo's d-pad, thse look fine today. EDIT: Quote:

Ahh, perhaps, but it'll likely jut out more, change the whole signature look of being a 'kobo' (the button) and lose the unified smooth/soft curves overall aesthetic. Form vs function will always have people in separate camps. I guess just improving the durability of the materials in the button (as u suggested) is the best option, which I also think they can do if they feel the need...as in whichever will reduce overall costs.

For those that said the button was coming away from the unit, do you have a picture?

the blue button on my white Kobo is becoming quite 'yellow' looking.
I've tried cleaning it carefully with the same products (Maguires) we use on our classic cars, without success. I accept that, like a steering wheel, it will discolour. If I have a choice I'd choose 'discoloured' over 'separating' every time! |

No discoloration on my white Kobo and I have used it daily since May 5--of course I have very dainty little hands---not. I have heard that Mr. Clean Magic Eraser can do wonders on many things like that.

I am soooooooo pissed off!
I spoke too soon about preferring discolouring to separating. There is now a fine separation line on the right clicker ![]() |

Susan, other folks have returned their Kobo when the clicker cover separates--it is the kind of manufacturing defect covered under the warranty.

The right side of my clicker is indented a little past the shell. Works fine, doesn't bother me. Unless of course they would replace my kobo 1 with a kobo 2, well then I might just have a problem with it then.

@ Taming - thanks Vicki - yeah I know.
I am pretty cross after all the probs I had when my Kobo had its hissy fit ... then a 5-hour trip by train to get it flashed, having to reload all the books I'd bought, etc. I thought it would now be OK and all those 'ishews' were behind me/it. Now I need to get it replaced and go through the whole recognising a different reader, re-do my purchased library on it, etc etc I am soooooooooooo over it!!! For someone who is not comfortable with IT/techno stuff this is just about the final straw for me. I can't tell you how disappointed I am with my little reader. I love the design & its simplicity of use - but the lack of reliable function really really pisses me off!!! |

Well, you have loads of time available before your warranty is out of time--so maybe see how it goes. People who had D-Pad problems have usually reported separation of the pad from the body--so this may be very different. Your choice. I heard (second hand) that at my local Chapters store, they said that they would be exchanging version one machines for the kobo wireless for folks once they could not get replacements. Not sure that means anything here, much less where you are.

I've been holding off exchanging in fear of getting a lemon, but this crackly button is getting irritating. Maybe I'll hold off a while longer to make sure all the non-wifi units are out of the stores in hopes of getting a wifi replacement unit. ;-) Could someone post a guide to what steps need to be taken when replacing a unit? Obviously, sync the old unit before taking it in for replacement. But should I do anything to clear the unit first, and is there anything to do beyond simply syncing the new unit? |

the right-hand side of my D-pad is now indented, so there's a small ridge between the blue button and the plastic of the chassis in which crap (technical term) from my hands collects. i can no longer just wipe across the bottom to clean the reader; it now needs a q-tip. the D-pad still works as well as ever (which means sometimes it doesn't, but for the most part it does).
is that the sort of "coming away" that other people are talking about, and for which chapters will give a replacement unit? ![]() |
