Pocketbook reps stated that while the processor has 800 Mhz, this speed will only be used for the more demanding activities (menu browsing, book loading, video) while less hefty tasks would be done at 533 Mhz.

Yes exactly, 533mhz is more than enough for reading, for example and saves a lot of energy.

so is this machine different than the Pandigital Novel, beyond the metal case?
Does it have a capacitive screen? A different processor? I'd love to hear officially. |

It has three buttons, no capacitive screen, sorry, the PB software in its entirety is present on board, you may install other reading software (if you get my drift) and has a different processor, yes (faster)

Accessible to the 3rd party apps?
Thanks very much for you guys' thoughtful answers.
![]() Another curiosity just came up to me. The Pocketbook IQ is said that it is open to any 3rd party applications. I understood this as the meaning that I can install any android apps into my IQ. Now, I'm wondering where I can find or puchase the 3rd party apps for IQ. Does it mean that I have an access to the Android Market? or shoud I find a way to the android app markets by myself just as the pandigital novel had been hacked to have an access to the Android Market? |

Android Market doesn't come out of the box because it requires the device to have things like two cameras in order to fulfill its requirements. Aside of hacking the machine and installing Market, you can try alternative markets like SlideME.

Besides them, I realized that the apps which I really like to install on my IQ are all available at Android Market, not at the SlideMe. That's bad... ![]() I might have to wait until someone customize the firmware to have an access to the Android Market... ![]() |

But the apps are available in other ways; in one of the early Pandigital Novel reports on how to hack it (reported on, and linked to by Nate The Great) there was a link that let you DL and sideload the K app *after* the Novel was hacked. The way I heard it was that anybody with an Android Cellphone can DL the apps and then copy them to a PC so if you know somebody with an Android phone, butter them up... ![]() Since the IQ is not locked down, the hacking isn't required, as I understand it. Another way to put it is that if what you want is a color Pocketbook reader you need to do nothing. If you want to go to town adding apps it is up to you to get them; Pocketbook won't get in your way... So, if you can track down the right apps, PBIQ might just be the first (nearly?) universal reader. Nearly, cause I need to find out if there is a LIT-reading app. |

I view the IQ as the PocketBook 360 that I never could quite justify, but wanted. My interest is in another eReader that covers the stuff my Kindle does not. AND with a reasonably functional browser. Plus a couple more goodies. One app for Android that I *really* want is Audubon Birds at $20. Or, iBirds when available for Android. |

I just emailed Audubon Birds and the following may be of interest:
Android users please note that Android will be coming out (date unknown) with a software release which allows you to download the complete app to your SD card. In the meantime you will need about 100MB free on your device for the initial download. iBirds is plainly the better app, but in February they said the Android release would be "just around the corner". It may seem a bit off-topic for some, but I think that interactive field guides are the natural extension of paper books to the digital environment. An plain eBook of Audubon, Petersons, National Geographic, or Sibleys would be disappointing. Last edited by asjogren; 11-01-2010 at 04:45 PM. |

iBird IS available for Android. I did not find it earlier. Here is the link:

Birding field guides... Heh. Yeah, that *is* a natural for the IQ.
Hmm, the IQ has multi-language TTS... Start thinking along those lines and you can see travel guides and phrase books, repair guides... Main problem is there is no viable rich-text ebook format (except possibly BLIO) that can do these kinds of things. Hence the early delivery of that kind of content as platform-specific apps (with all the annoyances we're seeing) rather than platform independent data files. Typical of the computer industry, actually; it is rare when hardware and software are properly matched. When software isn't ahead of hardware, it's the hardware that's raced ahead. In this case, it looks like the Pocketbook IQ hardware has all the capabilities to break through to all sorts of new markets but the software to host the required content just isn't there. An open application clearinghouse is something Android webpads are going to need if they are to prosper since it is clear Google is too closely tied to the phone vendors to do it themselves. Kudos to Dulin's for getting this. ![]() The more I think about it, the more the IQ looks like a placeholder/proxy/forerunner of the dedicated readers we'll see once we get good color eink screens a couple years from now. Should be interesting to see what people do with a reader/webpad at this price point... |
