Why not? The warranty transfers with the Kindle.

Nice, good deals there! I should have been clever enough to try that lol.

Anyway, this post made me think of something ... It is kind of funny how the mind of MR works. You buy 2 broken Kindles, and are lucky enough to score two free replacements. Many pats on the back ensue.

Whereas that other fellow recently picked up a NIB Kindle for a discount and people ripped him a new one for being so "stupid" as to risk buying property they felt he should have assumed was "stolen". Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd think that there would be more stolen/lost *used* Kindles out in the world than there are stolen *new* ones.

Excellent! I've been scouring Ebay with the same idea -- thought I could look for a broken one and just install a replacement screen or something if I could find one cheap enough, but i never thought about checking to see if the machine is still under warranty.

Congrats on your finds, by the way. I'd love a DX for reading graphic novels.

If you've got the serial number and the previous owner *DE*registered it, just go to your Manage Your Kindle page and add the device. If the previous owner didn't - as happened with one of the DXes - charge it up and rotate it around until you can see the top status bar and (when activated) the Menu. Go into Settings and Deregister... (This can be difficult to impossible if you're using a K2 - until you remember that the Font Size option also shows a setting that rotates the display.)

Yeah, I thought their reactions was off-base as well. I recently scored a 70-300mm VR lens for my Nikon for less than $100! The person had mislabeled it as a "Promaster". Others saw it and insisted that it wasn't a Nikon lens - but it was! Their loss, my gain.

And I've now managed to score four K2s and 2 DXes this way. Sigh... Others just won't learn.

Of course, if these had NOT been 'under warranty', I'd be having them fixed at my expense - and a darned expensive 'expense' for me. (Well, not TOO bad for K2s - they're still $135.)

Just tried L Neil Smith's "Timepeepers" and it does GREAT! I'm waiting for Phoenix Pick to release his "The Probability Broach: The Graphic Novel" and "Roswell, Texas" in ebook format. Which ElNeil says is in the works.

The screens on e-booker reader cost just as much as buying a a new E-book device. Especially for the end user. The screen is probably the most expensive component of any e-ink reader, or at least they used to be. I think that my PRS-505 was $400.00 several years ago, and a large portion of the cost was due to the screen technology.

Very true. Which is why it is less important to check whether there's warranty left on a K2 than on a KDX. The non-warranty repair price is above $250 for the DX!
