3.0.3 has (so far) bricked my Kindle. Startup progress stopped at about 15% and was still there 2 hours later when I came back from lunch/shopping. Have tried hard reset, no change.

The only hack I had going was the thing to add Justification option (if that even qualifies as a hack).

Very frustrating.

Yikes, I had a scare where my progress bar stopped for a few minutes, but thankfully it eventually completed.

Everything working fine here, screensavers intact.

@tomsem: I assume that's the point at which the 'real' update script is called... Hurray for this crazy update process... -_-". (You're talking about the usual boot progress bar (ie boy & tree), not the Update progress bar?)

Have you tried a hard reset to factory defaults? (ie. hold [HOME] during boot 'till the 'type reset' screen appears). If the update process crashed right at the beginning, your Kindle *should* still be in a non-compromised 3.0.2 state. But I can't say that for sure, so you may end up with a bit of a mess... :/.

And if you had the justification setting switched in the userstore, and not the system partition, that shouldn't have anything to do with the update process .

@flandroid: The last notch in the step 1 of 2? That's the kernel flash. Yep, it's potentially a bit scary, sitting there nearly at the end for >45s... .

3.03 update worked fine for me, all hacks still there, dual screen for Duokan stills shows up (have not booted into Duokan yet though).
I did this update because I hoped they did something on the WLAN section, I still can't get connected to my WLAN.
3.03 did not change anything for me. So far I can't see any differences at all. Except the version number...

Yes, exactly there. I also didn't like the bit where it lights the green charging light, despite not being plugged in, and I'm just looking at it going '...er?'

@flandroid: That may just have been the usual boot process . It flashes to green a bit at some point.

Yes, 15% progress on boy & tree screen. I never actually had the chance to restart from the Settings screen as directed. It was locked up as soon as I ejected it from the computer, showing the page I'd been reading when I plugged it in to the USB. I gave it a good minute or two to clear its head before attempting a hard reset, to no avail.

It finally appeared there was no alternative to factory reset, so I did that. And now I will be spending the next few hours getting everything back to where it was before (most of it was non-Amazon content).

One thing I started doing when I was having trouble with the hackless version of the font hack was to copy the documents folder of my Kindle to the desktop of my computer. When I had problems, I had to keep factory re-setting my Kindle which wiped out all the content and de-registered me. After I had my light bulb moment, I was cable to copy the documents folder back to my Kindle without losing my place in book or my bookmarks (I keep the wireless off unless I'm downloading or syncing).

I don't keep a large number of books on my Kindle so I'm not sure how indexing would be effected with this tip. Even if indexing starts over, it's better than having to reload content from scratch.

@tomsem: Huh. I assume/hope that the explanation is as simple as the update file getting seriously corrupted during the USB transfer or the original download, so much that it seriously upsets the framework (because there *is* a safety in place to verify the integrity of an update file, but it causes the update process to fail, not crash the system )...

What can we do if Amazon delete /etc/uks/*hack*.pem in their update script?

Works great here (takes no time), on K3, 3.0.3, with jailbreak and ssh server running.

After backing up the contents of my Kindle in two separate places:

Update 3.0.3 went smoothly; took about 10 minutes:
- after selecting 'update your Kindle' : 3 seconds to ' software updated'.
- restarted with green light
- rebooted
- showed: Kindle software updating, then ' software updated'
- restarted ' please wait a moment while your Kindle starts up' , with green light
- rebooted and started refilling collections

Effects on my Kindle so far:
- faster pageturning, more intense (?)black flash than before
- browser: much faster.
- bookmarks work better: don't have to log in to my gmail every time I open it, nor on my Mobile Read account. Dropbox synchronizes well, but doesn't open a book to read (as before) for ' opening multiple windows is not supported'.
- I am impressed by the speed of the searchfunction, which in my case was always the weak point. But now it really is fast, outside or inside a book, searching in google etc.

Sofar, all the updates speeded my Kindle up. I was satisfied with the 3.0.2. and hesitated for a second wether to update to 3.0.3., but for me it's worth the effort.

edit; don't use facebook/twitter on my browser, so can't report anything on that.
