There is really no reason to turn it all the way off. Sleep mode works fine.

I used the text to speech for two days about 8 to 10 hrs per day and it pretty much wiped out the battery. (I used it to listen while cross stitching.)

Paging vugtitan, I noticed he hasn't yet posted a call to arms demanding that Amazon add a snoring sound to the sleep mode to further differentiate it from 'awake' mode.

I like the pictures of dead authors, just wish there were more of them. (Pictures, that is.)

Emily has always looked creepy. Imagine what she looked like on the K1 (shivers)

There are very few pictures of Emily Dickinson available, but Amazon certainly could have chosen a better one!

She is, IMHO, a wonderful poet, just the same, so I do like the fact that she was chosen as one of the dead authors worthy of having their pictures included on the Kindle.

Thus far I have not hacked my K3; but I'm tempted. I would like the capability to change screen saver pictures.

Anyone care to speculate why Amazon doesn't let us do this? It works just dandy on my Nook.

My best guess has always been that Amazon would like to avoid having their devices seen at coffee shops with 'Git R Done' screensavers, or worse.

I don't mind Emily.........

But Ralph Ellison makes me wake it up and put it back to sleep immediately so that I don't have to look at him!

the birds and the fish are pretty cool.....

Birds and fishes are always the most admired ones, if they happen to be on when I show my new Kindle.
Next to Erasmus, I also like the reclining lady (who is she? think I ought to know her from somewhere).

Given that Amazon's reason for not allowing collections for two years was that they were worried that people would not be able to use them and stop using their Kindles I am sure that Amazon is concerned that people would screw up adding their own screen savers and stop using their Kindles.

Amazon thinks that many of their users are, well, stupid. Maybe technologically challenged is kinder.

I am hoping the successful launch of collections will change some of the higher ups feelings about these things and we will see changes that allow us to add screen savers and different fonts without hacking.

I installed the screen saver hack and have my own images. Are they shown in alpha-numeric order? I did see in the hack thread info that they could be randomized but otherwise what is the order?
