No snow in the winters here, so it's easier now.
At home:
Bottled water - canned food - peanut butter - chocolate

propane stove - bottled propane - crank flashlights - battery powered radio
candles - oil lamps - matches / lighters

In the car:
Rotated once a week - Bottled water - granola bars - chocolate - peanut butter

Blankets - jacket - rain jacket & boots - socks - work gloves - mittens - cap - kleenix (dual purpose

)
crank flashlight - battery charger w/ air compressor - battery powered radio
matches / lighter - flares - candles

I live in Brisbane, Australia, and we are apparently in for lots of flooding this summer... I live high on a hill, but my backyard still floods... I don't have anything in place, in case I can't go anywhere..

Maybe it's time I thought about that..

even without being as prepared as I used to be, I could probably go for a week unsupported at any given time here. I am always amazed at folks who have no wiggle room in their homes. I'm not sure if it's the way I was brought up, or it has just always been a "requirement" for me

Usually have some kind of hot drink/soup making kit in the car, (stoves, water, drinks etc), along with random blankets, jackets, shovels, torches, emergency triangle etc. And there's always at least two knives in the car.

At home we have more batteries than we know what to do with (rechargables that hold their charge when just sitting around - eneloop), ditto torches. Ditto candles and means of lighting them. A wind up torch and a wind up radio. Several stoves & fuel, plenty of dried and tinned food (including home-dried stuff). Usually try to keep a full freezer - partly so we have food available in case, but also to slow down defrosting if the power goes (and the freezer compartment is surprisingly well insulated, too). Usually have bottled water, always have ice that can be melted (I know it's not energy efficient, but it's better than nothing!). Oh, knives, kindling and other burnable stuff.

More than we are likely to need for any situation where we live

Just a thought. Add LED lights to your lists.

If you have a Harbor Freight near by you can usually find "in store" items like LED lights real cheap.
These cost $25.00 and have 2 levels of brightness. They also tilt and swivel.

This one ($7) is a real life saver at night. Last winter we lost power for two days. We put one covering the foot of the bed and one in the bathroom. It turns on when it detects motion and then slowly dims until off.

This ($12) works well for lighting a large area. It's great for lighting the area where you are preparing a meal.

One last thought on lights. If you pick out the right lights (the ones where you can remove the "head") you can bring them indoors at night and put them back out to charge in the daylight.

I used to use those tap lights in my barn. we didn't have power there and I wouldn't allow lanterns

I lived in Toronto during a 4 day blackout in August 2003. I was 6 months pregnant, lived in an apartment building (still do, but a different one) and it was hotter than hell. Now I make sure I have at least 3 working fans, flashlights, candles, canned goods, and a full tank of propane for the barbeque.

I'm also terrified of blowing a tire on the highway and being stranded waiting for a towtruck, so I always have a good jack and stand with a spare tire and extra tools.

I have two kits. One for home and one for the car.

First aid - minor kit + big bandages + quickclot
FireStarter - Matches/lighter + tinder + stove
Meals - 5 year shelf life emergency rations, water purification tablets.
Knife - plus assorted tools.
Odds and ends - duct tape, para cord, emergency ponchos, flares, etc.

The only exotic item I have in my collection is Potassium iodide. It's used if there is a danger of radioactive fallout. I added it after 9/11. Quickclot isn't that common, but it's been known to stop arterial bleeding.

I've never had to use it, and never expect to, but for $50 and 1 hour/year it gives me peace of mind.

In our old house we had a well-stocked disaster kit that got destroyed in a house fire.

More up-to-date: we have supplies of non-perishable food. For heating and cooking, we have a wood stove and endless supplies of wood. We also have a gas barbecue that's a lot easier to cook with. A large rainwater-supplied water tank. A wind-up radio and torch.

Although we live in the Shaky Isles, we're in the part that doesn't get earthquakes, and we're high enough up not to get flooded (although we do sometimes have the road closed by floods).

how much food do you have set aside? super glue is also a good addition to emergency kits
