I suspect he'd enjoy A Sailor of Austria by John Biggins. It's available on Kindle in the US, but not in the UK. Apparently it's the first in a series of four books.

Patrick O'Brian's Master and Commander series are great historical reads as well. SPeaking as a Cornwell fan, they're similar and he will probably like those.

You could try Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle:
Quicksilver The Confusion The System of the World http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Baroque_Cycle Three long and very absorbing books! |

One thing to do would be to go to amazon and search the 'tags' your husband likes.
Since he likes historical fiction, just search through those books tagged 'historical fiction' and you will find a ton of material. |

You might consider the "Lost Regiment" series of books by William R. Forstchen. It's an alternate history/adventure novel about a civil war regiment that gets transported to a different world.
Now that I think of it, I'm not sure if it is available as an ebook, but there is a lot of detail about the historical period surrounding the civil war era. |
