I don't smoke much (I quit about 6 or 7 years ago), but I do light up when I'm under a lot of stress. For mild stress I'll mostly eat or read.

I cry, and then come to MR and lose myself here, and then read. I'm thinking I'm going to have to find some new methods though - like exercising. My psyche (or whatever) has gotten immune to those coping mechanisms.

Have you tried eating a huge bowl of homemade mashed potatoes first?

Absolutely, but the stress is still there when I wake up.
Actually sometimes it refreshes me and I can better tackle what needs to be done.

I find crying alone also very cleansing.

But mostly everything else just makes the stress worse, except for prayer, which isn't on your list unless you consider meditation, which I don't.

Shopping wasn't a choice either. Not helpful in my case either!

Two really good points......prayer and shopping.

I try not to shop, because no matter how good it feels going in........I always hate myself the next morning.

Will get prayer in.

You lucky, lucky sod. I get hyperactive and even more insomniac. However, I do find it really hard to wake up when I've finally got to sleep and I'm stressed.

That doesn't make me sleepy, just slows things down enough that I'm not a gibbering wreck (ditto pasta, bread etc)

Same here - I don't think I've ever bought anything I liked or with long term value when I've bought it stressed.

Feel the same way about eating when I'm stressed, too - and only very recently been able to counter that.

For the hobbies - knitting (something simple - no cables or counting!), making wire components for jewellery, drawing or painting

I can't emphasize enough how much interacting with my animals calms me down. just putting my hands on them and feeling their life force and how mellow they are makes a huge difference in stressful situations for me.

once I can get the hamster off the wheel in my brain quite often I do. problem is; there is a fine line between sleeping off the stress and slipping into depression and only wanting to sleep

My highest stress periods usually involve hospital sitting with my mother. I try to keep a small (and easy!) knitting project in my purse at all times, like a sock. The knitting calms me, and surprisingly enough, just watching me knit without having to talk seems to calm my mother, too.

And KK, you're right, animal interaction helps a lot too. Sometimes I have to just hug a dog, you know?

Mostly I read, check out MR, do creative stuff (Tat, make jewelry, draw/paint, bead or do chain maille) or if I'm angry (all too often) I eat.

Here is the stress management technique I use. It's recommended in all the latest psychological texts. The funny thing is that it really works:
Picture yourself near a stream. Birds are softly chirping in the cool
mountain air. No one but you knows your secret place. You are in total
seclusion from the hectic place called "the world." The soothing sound of a
gentle waterfall fills the air with a cascade of serenity. The water is
crystal clear. So clear that you can easily make out the face of the person
you're holding under the water.
