I'm with Ken. Copper isn't magnetic, and American pennies are either copper or zinc. They would only be steel, if minted during WWII.

You are right, It is strongly magnetic in the top right corner, front and back, I will be much more careful about leaving my bank cards etc on it at night!

Nickel is magnetic and lots of coins around the world contain nickel. If I am not mistaken, a 5 cents coin is even called 'nickel'.
Even NiCd batteries are magnetic. Iron isn't the only metal with ferromagnetic properties.
