I'm glad this hybrid solution works, but confess l'm a little surprised as you have created a lot of 'start-paragraphs', <p class=...>, without any 'end-paragraphs', </p>.

Perhaps this is one of the many "wrong" HTML constructs that Calibre anticipates and corrects.

Looks like this is the case. I tried again using your original substitutions. The results were identical so it would seem that Calibre reads the new para beginning as the end of the previous para.

Thanks again for the great advice.

@jackie_w I believe calibre incorporates tidy html to clean up code just like Sigil. If he did his editing in Sigil under code view he would have seen how it was cleaned immediately after making the very awkward changes.
