My experience with game based books has been poor to say the least, however, the first ebook has surprised me to some extent.

First and Only starts out as what I expected; incessant blood and guts action with little redeeming content but, once past the first few chapters, things improved. There is actually some fairly good character development, some depth of background (reminiscent of Dune in fact), and some odd quasi religious/technomage/telepathic stuff going on (Orks?!?).

With so many free ebooks one can quickly overwhelm oneself so being picky is wise. This ebook is worth the time IMO. (at least if you're a Sci Fi affectionado.)

You will find that the Gaunt's Ghost series is a superb read and Abnett pulls no punches. The Imperial Guard are billions strong and are most often used like the Russian Army was used during the first assaults against the German war machine in 1941.

WH40K is a dark and bleak future and I often wonder if humanity are truly the good guys. But in an Imperium spanning a million worlds, there is room for everything and anything.

You will find a lot of references to telepathy and the religion of the God Emperor through out all the WH40K books, especially when Psychics such as Inquisitors, telepaths and Space Marine chaplains/librarians appear.

On that note, the Ultramarines series (Book1 - Nightbringer) is also a good series.

Well never read any WH books, but these (especially First and Only) look rather interesting.

If my bank account balance grew as quickly as my TBR list because of all these freebies I'd be a rich man!!!!!

Thanks to the OP for posting this, I can't wait until I start them.

I'm so glad I remembered this thread. I was in the bookstore tonight, trying to decide what to do with a nifty 40% off coupon. I was struggling under the load of three hardcover true crime books. (With the coupon, I think one of them was cheaper than the ebook edition. ) But I decided to check the SF/fantasy section, too, and some dark hand drew me toward the Warhammer omnibuses. (And slowly I turned...)

Yeah, I ended up putting back the true crime and getting a couple of Warhammer "omnibi" instead. The free ebooks will give me yet another way to try some of their authors. Anyway, at £6.50 per ebook, it looks like the omnibus trade paperbacks will still be the better deal. But at least this thread should prove a good source of suggestions for best Warhammer books. (Hint hint.)

P.S.

They've just put up their next free download and it's not a novel, it's the first issue of their new online anthology magazine "Hammer & Bolter".

The next freebee isn't in fact an ebook it's an audio book, "Horus Rising" to be exact. Well CD1 anyway, and is available now at the Black Library along with the options to pre-order two ebooks ("Dead Men Walking" & "Wulfrik") and an audio book ("Garro: Oath of Moment").
