Ipads are nice and are pretty easy for the non tech people. An extravagance though for those who already have a desktop/laptop/Ipod/Iphone/ereader etc.
If I had money to burn, instead of being just comfortable financially or if it did something II could not do already, then for sure I would buy one.
Sad to say even if I did buy one it would just sit on the shelf and gather dust after the first day or so.

If you are the type to go find a quiet place specifically to be free of distraction, then you can certainly avoid distracting yourself when reading on an iPad. If you don't have the discipline to read on iPad, I seriously doubt you have the discipline to remove all the other distractions available to even kindle readers.
That would extend to a dead tree book as well surely?

My personal choice was a device that allows me to read with out the INBUILT distractions of messaging, email, games and phone calls. Those functions are delegated to my smart phone which resides on the dressing table in our bedroom so it specifically cannot distract me from afar.

I can then concentrate on reading on my single purpose device with the only distraction being a hot/cold drink or my bride sitting next to me.

I guess it depends on how easily distracted someone is. I read past my bus stop on my iPad the other day, while traveling overseas, lol. I edit for a living on computers, with loads of built-in distractions. No problem.
