email application

I'd suggest using mutt for email application. It'll probably work out of the box, and, being terminal/ncurses-based, it's lightweight enough on the screen refresh.

BTW, do the hardware keys generate keyboard events to a terminal-based application?

Hardware keys should work in the terminal if the terminal is registered correctly with the xserver. I haven't tested this though...

Mutt does compile without problems, but I think there's too much keyboard activity for it to be usable with the virtual keyboard.

First post updated.

Abiword looks like it should work without many problems. That would make a great document editor/Word doc viewer...

Man I wish I had my iLiad.

qwenview is made for KDE, so that will not work (easily at least).

ggview compiled without problems. That shouldn't take too much effort to port.

Menus

My 2p worth is this:

Irex should change the content listener so that when you highlight a file a right push on the flip bar would open up a menu, then you could copy and paste, rename and delete the file easily.

If you added 2 mini icons on every page one would allow you to flip pages with the flip bar (as you can now) and the other would be an "empty file" which you could use for pasteing, in this way a copy and paste from a USB stick onto internal memory would be a doddle.

The more file management you can do without using the stylus the better as a) you can do it one handed and b) it saves power.

Also if anyone could get the Irex talking to a bluetooth keyboard, this combined with a text editor and an email client would make my life complete. I wouldn't have to lug a laptop around at all.

Inside a terminal, won't the keyboard run fine with the terminal application passing the keystrokes over to the mutt inside?

And, with a good readline set of bindings for the harware keys for one's typical email VIEWing session, mutt could be just the reader to use.

I just think that the onscreen keyboard is a pita to use, and thefore a text based email applicatoin would be quite difficult to get around in.

But hey, if it'll work for you, then I'm all for more apps on the iLiad. I'll post it after some testing.

I'll be able to post it later today. I'm setting up my build environment again. I was doing some testing with gtk 2.8, and had built it using that.

I'll add another vote for Sylpheed (Claws-mail.)

And a new vote for Gargoyle the interactive fiction (or text adventure) interpreter front end that has great respect for accurate typographic presentation. A perfect match for the iLiad and eInk.

How about some type of wiki type database file? It would not necessarily need to be edited on the iLiad but could be easily navigated through.

A simple spreadsheet would also be nice.

Some sort of forms support for a small database would be helpful for like recording time/events/information.

Of course all the standard PDA stuff would be a nice addition, even though the iLiad is not the quickest of the devices out there.

I don't think I'll be using anything that needs a lot of keyboard input in a hurry.
What I would find useful would be an app. which could pull down my web-hosted iCal calendars and display them. And perhaps even let me write events to them.
I'm using thunderbird with lightning at the moment, with the calendars on a webdav server.
Hooking into Google calendar would be nice too.
