It's an eInk thing. Most people don't even notice it after awhile.

My sister and I swapped E-readers one weekend.
I have a JetBook Lite with no screen flash, she a Kindle with screen flash. I hated the flash with a passion. She loved the JBL and began to hate her screen flash. She found the JBL text to be more crisp as well. I totally agree. She plans on purchasing a JetBook Lite and giving her Kindle to her daughter. Certainly not scientific data, but just two perspectives. |

Wow. I got to fondle a Kindle3 a couple of weeks ago (a friend bought one) and it hardly flashes at all, compared to older readers, and the page turns are really speedy. I really don't notice the flash at all after a while--never did, even on my older devices.

I've got a Nook, and there's definitely more "flash" than there is on a Kindle 3, but like others have said, after a while, you don't pay any attention to it.

If it gets unbearable, you can synchronise your eye blinking with the screen flash

For the same reason, I waited over a year before buying my first e-ink device and now I don't consciously notice the flash at all. I just hit the page turn button with 3 or so words remaining on the last sentence and the next page is displayed before my eyes can scan to the top.

I only notice the flash occasionally although it is there for every page.
Small price to pay for the convenience of the ebook reader. I lost my Sony on the bus (was found and returned four days later by wonderful driver) and was reading pbooks for a day. I was quite amazed at how cumbersome the act of pbook reading, which I have been practicing for more than 50 years, seemed. Small page flash with one handed reading vs. setting down coffee, turning page, picking up coffee and page turns back -or- setting down sandwich, making sure fingers are clean, turning page -or- Changing position in bed to turn page and significant other wakes up and says what are you still reading for at this time of night, gives big groan and stalks off to sleep on the couch then stalks back to steal all the blankets the minute you fall asleep. More page flash on a channel change on TV but that doesn't seem to bother people too much, even the technophobes. Helen |

Pocketbook readers can have the flash deactivated at the same price of Cybooks (that is, a bit of ghosting). I don't notice it too much, but it's more book-like if it doesn't flash,a t least for me.

She doesn't particularly want an e-book reader of any description - she had a look at mine out of curiosity, but isn't especially interested in one for herself. If she does decide she wants one, she'll buy it herself.
She definitely doesn't want an iPad - she's just bought an Android phone and was quite vocal at the several people that suggested an iPhone ![]() |
